I'm about to buy two pairs of large harddrives which I'll be storing my WAV files on, in aluminum USB caddys. 1 drive will be a back-up of the other drive.

There are several makes of harddrive out there, and apart from Some being IDE and some being SATA (Im not fussed - both will be piped down a USB2.0 cable), all the makes, seem much of a muchness.

I've got my own preference about harddrives, but its not necessarily an un-swayable one.

What are your favourite, and least favourite makes?

Horror stories and tales with happy endings welcome.. smile.gif

IBM were Fijitsu drives they did some deal where one company makes them and they badge them up..

the IBM deskstar got renamed the IBM deathstar due to high return rates...

Samsung are getting good reviews based on speed and price however I still feel the seagates are the best option...

seagate bought maxtor out.. so new maxtors have the seagate warranty...

Seagate also do a range of more expensive server drives designed for 24/7 useage...

Agree with Marc, Seagate seem to rule the enterprise world successfully.

I will not touch Maxtor with a bargepole, I have had many failures of various sized Maxtor drives (I used to build systems for friends and family) and whilst they were always replaced without any trouble under warranty, they still needed to have the software reinstalled etc.

Seagate all the way for me.

Seagate for me;
Western Digital NOT for me.

Based on never having an issue with many Seagates, but having to return 2 Western Digital drives which failed within daqys of purchase.

I have used a pair of Maxtor 30Gb drives for years without a hitch (1999), but I understand they aren;'t so reliable now.

Western Digital Raptor is my HD of choice.
Very stable and fast. 10,000rpm Sata.
I've got 6 in a raid array in my water cooled Thermaltake tower.

Agree seagate everytime.

would always avoid maxtor as have had a lot of bad experiences with them at work

I know a chap who does data recovery from failed hard drives and he told me that he sees less failed Seagate HD's than any other brand and Maxtor are the worst (used to be IBM - now Hitachi Deathstar but since the allegiance with Hitachi, they seem to be better).

Have an external maxtor hard drive which is over three years old. Touch wood, it has been o.k. for recording video but I'd better keep an eye out for a new hard drive just in case!

Dont forget that now Seagate own maxtor there are big changes being made..

yes there are a lot of broken maxtor drives out there but maxtor have sold more drives into the desktop pc market than any other company so there are more of them to go wrong, fail rate on the maxtor is not as high as IBM etc..

but looking at the poll we all seem to agree Seagate is the way to go...

a forum first.. a majority vote in favor of one product boff.gif

Always used seagate, Until recently we purchased a usb harddrive with an IBM slim hard disc in.

Seems ok at the mo, but its only used for backup
