Heh, I bet this is going to sound very trivial, but I am having qualms about my name. I picked DJ Phantom just off the top of my head, although I figure that when I start doing more formal events like dances and weddings, I am going to go with a more formal name.

For now, working my way up with house parties for free and the occasional odd birthday, I'm looking for something that is memorable to the crowd I'm playing to

For now I'm concentrating on dance music but more specifically top 40 and radio stuff

My girlfriend, who is the be-all-end-all in my life right now, chuckled at my name and told me it sounded lame. So I was crushed
oops.gif

Do any of you have suggestions?
People around here tend to call me "The Trevdogg" -- Not sure how I ended up with that name, but it has definite Snoop Dogg connotations. I might end up using that.
YourBigEvent
Your name depends on the type of function, a high class wedding in a marquee would not even think of hiring a DJ called DJ Scatcher or something like that as they do not require a disco but some music to dance to (no difference to me and you) whereas if you are a club DJ then the above name would be OK. I started off a long time ago when 'DJ XXX' wasn't around, I wouldn't have chosen it anyway but stuck to my name so Andy's Disco Soundz was born (it was that long ago, it was cool to end words with a Z instead of a S, Mikeee will remember that) then people knew that the DJ was called Andy and it was at the beginning of the Yellow Pages etc etc, then when people wanted to book me, or a DJ that I would recommend they were confused that Steve would turn up for Andy's Disco, so I changed the name, as I was getting more and more posher do, and as stated above posh people don't want a disco, so just took the initals and started ADS.
Wanted to keep it to ADS but obviously ADS is also ads, (adverts) and I need a website, ads.com was for sale at $450,000 so rather than spent the cash I just added Entertainments, hence ADS Entertainments was born.
When choosing a name remember you may still be using it in 20 years time, so I would advise against topical names, popular films / people etc. much in the same as Soundz was cool and trendy years ago, it isn't too hip and cool now.

Personally, I really dont like the "DJ" tag before the name.... I work under my company name, and all my clients know me by my first name. All you have got to do is to give your client a memorable evening, and whatever you decide to call yourself, they will remember YOU! patriot.gif
YourBigEvent
That's what I was trying to say but a little longer way.
Gary
If you can avoid the over-used clichés, so much the better.

Disco names beginning with "Night" or "Nite", or ending with "Sound" or "Beat" are a little overused.

So avoid double-clichés such as "Nite Beat" or "Night Sound".

SSSSSsssssshhhh!!!!!

Paula is speaking!

Dont be rude, what about those of us that still use the Sounds name hey!
We will not get into this converstion again!

Paula has spoken!

I have to agree with all of the above. DJ "Names" are usually reserved for Big name D.J's who work the Club Circuits around the world. They use a "Tag" for promotional purposes since it would sound a lot better than "John Smith" appearing here tonight smile.gif . Even so - more big names and producers are using their real names more and more - e.g Pete Tong, Dave Pearce, Paul Oakenfold etc

If you are intending on doing mobile work, then far better to concentrate on a striking and catchy name for your Roadshow which you can then use for promotional purposes. Introducing yourself to a client as "Hi, I'm Chris Pointon, from The Ultimate Roadshow" sounds far more professional and friendly than "Hi, I'm D.J Dazzling Darren".

Hmmnn Dj names......My Initials, PJL drop the L....he he Pj the dj biggrin.gif wacko.gif 042.gif
Chrispy
Lol Paula, my middle name is James - so i'm CJ the DJ.

Still got to be better than Gary-okie on the Karaoke
YourBigEvent
Not quite as catchy as mine.......AH the DJ. OK so it needs some working on...
Gary
So, I'll be GJ the DJ tongue.gif

And Paula...hmmm, looks like I owe you a Barcardi and Coke already for next years Plasa... beer.gif

(Lads, get the sack truck ready.... wine.gif )

On the names side of things...I do get a mental image appear whenever I see a DJ advertised as "DJ Fred" or "DJ.. whatever". I immediately think of turntablists, scratching and hearing just one beat being dragged back'n'forth at various speeds, under a knackered stylus for hours on end.

Why hide behind a false dj name? Think you should follow some of the advice above ,but if you must make a name then why not DJ T ? biggrin.gif

Dont knock the dj names guys, its all in good fun and means something to the individual,
I wouldnt know where to start if I choose one for myself! Alot of people use nicknames, and with the things Im called I wouldnt even consider it, fear.gif
My dad never used a name but thats because his name/initials are. DJ LEE You do remember people by there dj names more than youd expect, for instance I know a Dj Sparky who choose his name through the job he does and so do alot of other people, but we seem to forget he's actually called Paul.
I also know a dj Dolly (no relation to Shaun) but I'd better not comment on that.

But one name that does concern me in which I see advertised on a tree, Is
Dj Boots and his hifi! fear.gif Now this Im gonna have to go and see.................................................

In the 70's it was the in thing to add 'International' to the roadshow name. I used to work for 'Good Vibes International Roadshow'. Well we did leave Norfolk occasionally & travel to Suffolk & Cambridgeshire biggrin.gif
DJPhantom
I can't believe the response factor of this forum. It's absolutely great. I appreciate the help of all of you very, very much.

You're right.
notworthy.gif

No more tacky nicknames for me!
YourBigEvent
I had completely forgotten about the International bit, everybody used it.
Chrispy
Speaking of Names ADS - I hope that ADS Entertainments is not linked with a certain ADH one nono.gif the owner of which, is being a right pain in the Ar$e lately smile.gif .

Being half asleep yesterday, poor old ADS nearly got banned oops.gif
YourBigEvent
ADH keeps finding me on msn and bombarding me with offers that to be fair are far too expensive.....It's not who you know what you know etc etc.

Don't ban me fear.gif I've got no real friends, just cyber friends biggrin.gif
