Now, I have my computers linked at home, I have set certain folders to share,
i can see all the folders, fls etc, but when i try & open a access database it won't allow me to, but if I copy it and paste it onto the 2nd PC, I can open it

It should work.......mine does. however it is setup slightly differently I have a shortcut to it on the remote p.c. ...you could try that, although not sure why that would work and the other way wouldn't

Sounds like the shared folder containing the Access database file maybe set to read only? (Access generally wants to have writable access to the file.)
On the 2nd PC, if you try to create a new file in the same folder (e.g. text document) what happens?
Also when you say it won't allow you to, what error message are you getting?

It sounds like a security issue here Ian. I guess the OS is XP Pro and Access is 2003?

It may also be a case that your bases aren't set to sharing. That can be easily remedied by going into the options on the original base(s) and setting them to net/share.
However, ignore this unless you are getting an info message which tells you that you have either a share violation and/or insufficient rights to view/edit the base!

I'd go with the 'read only' share being the problem.
Microsoft Office applications like to write temporary files into the same directory as the file being opened, and if it can't do this, this might prevent it from opening the file.
Having said that, I would have expected a simple prompt asking if you wanted to open the file as 'read only', which is what I get here under those conditions.
But then, I don't use XP....

I've done all the things suggested, here is the message I get
Microsoft Access cannot open this file
This file is located outside your intranet or an untrusted site. Microsoft Access will not open the file due to potential security problems.
To open this file, copy it to your machine or an accesable network location

Ian,
Are you attempting to open the database directly from the network, or via a drive mapping?
If the former, I'd recommend mapping a drive letter to the share in question and retrying.
Failing that, maybe have a go at following
this Micro$oft article, specifically the section "WORKAROUND" subsection "Users".
Best of luck

First of all map the data base folder as a network drive si ut has a real drive letter on all the computers like Z: or somthing...
make sure all permistions are set correctly
and check the ownership of the folder is set correctly
make sure your firewall software is allowing traffic on the correct ports from the server/source computers IP address..
also if the data base is linked to any other data sorces these have to be shared and available to the computer your using too...
And you have right clicked on the file and made sure there is no "unblock" button waiting for you to click...
