The right side only of the cd player is not working properley.
Sound check ok, start gig ok but then about 10 min into gig it will not read any discs, leave it fot about 5-10 min then it will start to read cd again but very slow, then after aboou another 5 min it's fine and ok for the rest of the gig.
This has happened on my last 2 gigs
Anyone had the same problem and if so how did you rectify it.
DJ Marky Marc
Sounds like condensation rather than a deck fault..

do you keep the decks out in the cold of a van or garage and then bring them into a wrm room for the gig?

have you checked to see that the firmware on the deck is the latest?..

are you playing original Cds not Mp3 or burnt discs?

smulou
Not too sure of how I would check the firmware ?
Yes it is kept in a garage, did set up gear for gig in the afternoon so had about 5 hrs to climatise to room temp, however I do remember that it was a very cold night in the function room as no heating.
I'll bring it into the warmth of the house a couple of days before my next gig and see if that makes a difference.
Would it be best to keep it switched on for a day or two to aid climatisation ?

Sorry forgot to mention they were Original cd's only
DJ Marky Marc
Bring it into the house and play Cds with it for a few hours, I'm sure your problem will vanish...

Or......
A good bit of advice I read on here somewhere - take a hair dryer along with you, and with it on low heat, gently warm up the innards to remove any condensation from the lenses.

Not had a chance to try this idea out myself, but I do now carry a hair dryer in my spares box. smile.gif

Tried bringing into hose on last gig, played cd's on it for a couple of hrs continious play, inside house for a full day, in car for 2hrs to get to gig which was not a cold day, set up gear at 3pm, did not start gig until 1am (don't ask a Burns night that goes on until around 6am)
Player ok first 10 min then same problem, 10 min later player fine for remainder of gig ??
I'm not techie but could it be something to do with the lens reader ?
If so is it a costly repair
Andy Westcott
Doubt it's the lens, as if this were the case it wouldn't miraculously fix itself.

I would suspect a firmware issue, as Marc hinted at.

Not very technical, can you elaborate a bit more on firmware and what I can do to try and rectify the problem
Thanks

Gary is the resident Denon expert so if you get realy stuck send him a message with your phone number..

However, visit denondj.com find the dn-4000 page and follow the instructions and links on how to update your firmware...

ok this may also be a silly question but do you play the same songs in the same order at the start of your gigs? as I can't see why the deck would go wrong and then fix its self always in the same time frame...
Gary
Hi all. It could be the firmware IF both decks were showing the same problem - since both sides will have the same firmware running on them from the factory. But...upgrading to the latest firmware is free, easy, and quick (I used to know some girls like that...).

By the way...how to "test" the firmware.... Simply hold down the PRESET button for 2 seconds (this takes you into the Presets Menu - within which you can do all sorts of groovy stuff). Use the Parameters Knob (track changer knob) to scroll thru the list of settings, options and information, until you get to "SYS Version" (or something like that). Pushing DOWN on the Parameters knob will show the Version numbers of the various types of firmware (Sys, DSP etc). Write these numbers down eg: SYS = 4956 DSP = 1234. Then surf over to the DenonDJ website (www.denondj.com), look in the 4000 section and see if the latest SYS and DSP versions are the same as your machine - if not, register on the denonDJ site and download the free firmware upgrade - burn it to CD and follow the simple instructions - its almost as easy as playing a music CD.

I have heard of just one similar case to your syptoms. It was down to condensation (as suggested above). Water attracts water (most of the time - indeed "Solar Stills" are about the only useful thing that I ever remembered from a survival week I went on years ago). A dry thing wont attract more mosture (easily) when it suffers a wide temperature range...but something thats wet/damp already will. I'm not about to suggest that you poke a hairdryer into your 4000 drives...but...honestly a week undisturbed in an airing cupboard (for your 4000, not you) might yield results eg: totally drying out the unit, so that condensation doesnt have a damp surface to re-occur on.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for that Gary and thanks also for the e-mails you've sent me.
I've left the player in a warm room switched on for a day now and have carried out a dummy run gig for the last 2hrs (I've not been standing there like a prat on my own but have been constantly playing, cueing, searching cd's) Up to now fingers crossed everything working ok so maybe it is a condensation problem.
The other thing that I'm now thinking is, if it is consensation is I leave CD'S in the garage also so that may also contribute to the problem ?
Thanks all for the advice I'll let you all know how I get on.
Not gign until Mid March now because of new job I've taken so not accepted any bookings until work gets settled but will let you know if problem has been rectified.

I've had times where cold cds refuse to play when brought into warm sweaty nightclubs..

Hi Guy's,
A month or so ago you may remember that I posted a topic about my dennon cd player which was not reading the disc.
Thanks to you all for the advice, I started with the basic and cheapest option first of leaving the player indoors rather than store in my garage to see if it was a condensation problem.
Good to report that I've had no problems since so thanks to all of you who gave advice.
Another satisfied customer which just shows how having a forum like this is such a great thing as everyone shares advice and experiences to each other to help where they can.
Something that money can't buy.
Thanks again

Would it not be better in the future to buy a genuine Denon player rather than the cheap Chinese knock off called Dennon. whistling.gif

I had the same problem with mine. Sent it back to denon and they said a mechanism was faulty. THey replaced the whole unit. Same side of cd deck aswell.
