I've been too busy to visit the forum recently, but though I would let you alll know about the gig.
Getting their wasn't easy due to various train cancellations on the day, so we eventually arrived around 9.15pm, having missed the support, but in time for Ms Brown.
I have always found the sound at the Jazz Cafe to be less than perfect. This time the problem was her vocals being to low in the mix much of the time.
The sound man seemed to be limited in how high he could get the mic volume, by feedback from her monitor speakers plus she had a habit of singing in to the side of the mic, and not that close to it.
However she has an undeniable talent.
I wished she had performed a few more of the 90's & 00's house tracks that she has sung on (some of which have charted) but she mainly stuck to the more soulful stuff - obviously what she likes best.
The majority of people there didn't seem to be fans who had been there from the start - given away by the fact that they only sung along to the well known songs, and during "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" they would try to sing it like the Diana Ross version, rather than Jocelyn's version. (For instance JB repeats the "to keep me, to keep me, from getting to you", but the audience around us would sing "to keep me from getting to you".)
After "Somebody Else's Guy" she finished with a gospel song which, whilst good, came across as a bit of an anti climax, but it is obviously something that her and the band are passionate about.
Afterwards she took the time to say a few words to each of us in the restaurant. But she didn't look good - obviously out of breath and sweaty from the performance, but also as if she isn't very well.
So all in all a great night.
