Anyone else of the opinion that disco-wise, Girls Aloud are one of the best groups produced in the UK in a long long time?
I mean...alot of the stuff they do seems to be covers, but certain tracks are becoming ever popular!
Alot of the time, current pop acts only go down well with the listening public if you play their current release, however there's ever faithful fallbacks of Love Machine, Something Kinda Oooh...you can pull alot of tracks out of their back catalogue and get a pretty full floor!
Just a thought!

ONE of the best......cos I would be mortified if you had gone 1 stage further, and forgot about MisTeeq (Ok I know) or Sugarbabes !!!!
I always think about girls aloud as a kind of female Bay City Rollers!!!!

I would be more inclined to say that it shows the current state of the crap being produced over the past few years.

Oh yeh, total crap!
Then again, it's also party cheese (all be it modern cheese) and wouldn't most people argue - as much as it fills some dancefloors - that YMCA, Macarena and saturday Night are all crap!

Don't like them. Sugababes are far better... at least they use new material instead of murdering songs like "jump" and "I think we're alone now"
jamesmurphy
Dec 18 2006, 03:57 PM
Personally i didn't think it was possible to murder "I think we're alone now"...Tiffany did that when she made the cover of it.
I think Tommy James & the Shondells did it first in 1967, and it was only listenable then, now it's just sickening!

From a female perspective Girls Aloud may sound great in the pop music targeted but they let the side down with their attitude sadly. Yuk.

Thoroughly agree!! Mind you, in my day RnB stood for Rythm and Blues - a term which would not apply to an y of the 'bling-bling' artists that seem to be under the mistaken idea that they quality in that genre.

Why is it crap? If people like it, and they want to dance to it, then to describe it as crap is innacurate. It might not be your personal taste, but then everyone likes something different and as dj's, we are there to play what people ant to hear, not what we want to hear. If you just want to play your favourites, stay at home with a personal cd player 'cos you won't make a success of being a dj.
Girls Aloud are great floor fillers - in the same vein as Shania's Don't impress me much, Chers' Believe and numerous others. They help us do our jobs and good on them. You don't have to like them personally, but you have to agree that they, like others such as the Sugababes, make a great party atmosphere and appeal to all age groups.

I actually think the opposite...I hate their sound. I find it too harsh and over-produced, bordering on distortion most of the time. I rarely play them and rarely get requests for them. I do play Sugababes and Mis-Teeq though, and I will always try to play an original track in preference to any poor cover version.
Still, I guess the audiences we play to determine what we play - horses for courses!

I think the bloke has made a good point..I think their music can fill the dance floor. I especially play love machine quite often..This dosn`t mean I like it BTW....I must admit though I do like them and not for their musical attributes..
Have to also say that their latest one, Think we`re alone now is WOEFULL!!

Hi Andy,
Welcome to DJs United. How about intoducing yourself in our
intoduction area. Doesn't have to be too indepth, but an insight into your experience, area of work, music preferences etc would be nice.

Unfortunately this seems to be the way pop music generally seems to sound, although there are some exceptions.
Better not start another discussion on this!!
Oh, and welcome, Andy.

Just to add my thoughts
Being involved in the industry for so long now I have seen, along with quite a few other members on here, that there have been a vast change in the industry.
As DJ's we have to play what is required at the event, it might not be to our liking and if the dj hates it that much they should not accept the booking, as the dj will not understand what should be played correctly etc.
without going to much off topic.
Taking into account that artists of today can not perform these day's without the aid of effects etc. there are a few that perform to the general public and get away with it.
I have to say that sadly Rhythm an Blues has died but I think it will come back in another form because there a lot of acts out there that could perform in this area.
Girls Aloud are commercially very good along with quite a few other girl bands, and yes we get asked for them and they have become, floor fillers, but then we get asked for 80's and 90's as well and they fill the floor just as well, again it depends on the event the people and groups on the night.
I am doing a 80th birthday in February Big Band sounds only to be played all and I am very much looking forward to this as it will be the first time for a long time that I have played this sort of music on 2K of power in a room with very good accoustics.
Now what will the guests do the younger ones more than likely will not stay and say the dj was crap the middle age group will put up with it, but the person who's birthday it is I hope will enjoy it.
Just trying to put it all in perspective.

I think it depends on what you term as modern Rhythm n Blues as there are so many different genre descriptions banded about. There are a lot of excellent "soul" acts around which are a direct descendants from original R&B but not sounding like what the media tends to descibe current R&B as.

I too rarely get asked for Girls Aloud and I rarely play them. Love Machine goes down well at certain gigs when there's a younger crowd, but the fact that few people request them is the telling factor as far as I'm concerned as to their true popularity!

Girls Aloud make funtime pop music same as Westlife or Take That,
As has been discussed before different music works in different places.....
Girls Aloud remain popular in the North of England, where the majority of the girls are from, except of course Nadine Coyle who is from Derry in N.Ireland.
Oh yes(name dropping time)
I know both Nadine Coyle and her dad!
