A bar,no dance floor but plenty of floor space.Modern neon colours and modern furnishings, bar staff young model like girls in skimpy modern clothes and young well trained fit tatooed and pierced guys, both sexes bartend in the freestyle way with lots of tricks and juggling. The punters (capacity 200) aged from 20 to 40,opening times 9 till o2.30. Free entry and queues every night.(This place exists i have played it for the last 5 years) The instructions when concerning the music concept came from the owner who said "we have the full range of Pioneer gear installed and you can have any equipment you need, i know nothing about music so you sort it out"The challenge is Where would you start and what theme would you adopt? notworthy.gif

The phrase "If it aint broke dont fix it" springs to mind.

As there queues and punters every night, I wouldnt change anything with regards to the music policy.

I'd flip the whole thing on its head and look at the quietest nights and find out whats different about those. Even look at "future" business and perhaps do a "Under 18's/16's" night on the quietest night, with only soft drinks available.

Also, while the venue needs little effort as the moment, divert your energies to looking at what the nearest rival is "up to". Are the rivals getting more of a certain age group that this venue isnt? Remembering that the over 25s have more disposable income than the teenagers etc.. So maybe an over 25s night with suitable music and more things to spend their money on...like upper quality bar food etc.

As for...

Dont let this go to waste...a nice pair of monitors near the DJ? A scrolling LED message board for promotions, more lighting, a drinks fridge in the DJ area...
C.S
AH Gary, i am ahead of you on the future plans,i dont agree about the rival bit as it can get you obssesed and you lose track of what you are doing(have fallen down this hole before). What i was trying to do was find out music wise what you guys would have done,i have used these years to build this place musicaly,we have been full since it has opened and i was lucky and hit the jackpot with the music early. PS liked the led message board idea, are they expensive? We have a dj fridge and monitors!

"......Earth calling Chris, come in Chris......"

Cue Chris....!

There are two (I believe) which Chris does...one with "normal" sized lettering, and one with extra big/tall lettering for larger venues...

It's an almost impossible question for anyone on here to answer properly as no one knows the local market, including me, as although i have worked there, that was 15 years ago, and as we all know in this business things can change rapidly.
I would only suggest a music policy & theme after seeing what went down well in this venue and other bars/clubs in the area over a 3 week period.
It would be madness for example to blindly say "yeah a garage night" if few people in this town liked Garage!

In that case... I don't have a gig next Wednesday yet, how about we bring the Soul night forward to Wednesday 188.gif
C.S
Ok, i shall reveal what we did,and esk it had nothing to do with knowing the local audience, as you know most of the popular music here is either from the Uk or the US. We played absolutely everything! (even quo dan!) short sets with 2 or 3 tracks of each music type, never predictable just a great big jumble of music ,from chart stuff to heavy to irish folk to trance to reggae it doesnt matter,(yes dan we do chill sometimes) Once a month we do themes, just had a rock night, we have short themed parties (8 till 11) i am doing a depeche mode one this friday(120 tickets sold in advance). So Mr Eskie when you come and do your soul one i will have you finnished playing and drinking with the senoritas by 11.05! What is wonderful with this kind of gig is that if you are in a rut then playing like this gets you out,you can push the limits and really have a good time. biggrin.gif One thing we did make an effort to do was go our own way and completely ignore what the competition was doing, now they are chasing us!

a bit like 'Joe's Garage' then but without the diddlee diddlee diddlee?

Joe's was a club in a nuclear bunker in Bodo (the town where Chris lives) in the late 80's, and the music policy was basically anything that wasn't mega popular!, so in the space of 1 hour you might hear The Doors, Barrington Levy, Raze, James Brown, Frank Zappa and the 10,000 Maniacs! but extremely unlikely to hear Kylie, Rick Ashtray or Madonna!
C.S
Just add a bit of the popular chart stuff and you got it! laugh.gif Just wait till you see the bar maids, they are hired purely on looks and willingness to wear small items of clothing,dj box is built into the bar so you are next to them, glad i am married or it might affect the old blood pressure!
YourBigEvent
I am always willing to learn from others and as a local I feel you should take me along first to experience this. tongue.gif

sounds like I'm gonna need to wear blinkers if I wanna actually concentrate on DJ'ing and the crowd!

Hei!

Have you had a latin theme? I hear salsa music is very popular in the Scandinavian countries.

Here, in South Park - er, Beach, there are approximately 250 clubs/bars along a 15 block stretch adjacent to the beach, called Washington Avenue (most are packed to the rafters every day of the week - different themes each day).

Many of these have split rooms with different music, some have outdoor patios with one DJ spinning rave or house, etc., while inside another DJ spins something totally different (salsa, merengue, cumbia, world beat or phat funk).

The latin thing is very hot here, especially among european tourists who find it "exotic" (lots of Brits vacation here). Many of the clubs are owned by French ventures, as was the case with Amnesia or Spanish as was Pacha.

Just a thought.
C.S
Havent done a latin night yet basicaly because of lack of music, the commecial latin stuff like enrique and ricky martin are big but i am looking for stuff with the same dancebility and highlighed drums but a little less unknown here in scandinavia.YEs it is popular here and its getting bigger laugh.gif

Not sure I understand; you're looking for music less unknown (in other words, more known) in Scandinavia???

I have tons of latin tracks, both commercial and those known primarily among the latin community. I'd be more than happy to send some stuff your way (in a perfectly legit manner, as I don't condone illegal file sharing - which is why I subscribe to Rhapsody). So, if you give me a clue (Celia Cruz? Gloria Estefan? Marc Anthony? Los Orishas?) I can put together a little care package.

Think of it as an opportunity for a cultural exchange.

Regards,

Jorge

PS: Where exactly is the base camp for that slope on your avatar????
C.S
Sorry slip of the tongue there, i meant less known in Scandinavia of course,we have mainly had Inglesias and martin as well as marc anthony and gloria estevan otherwise nothing else! My basecamp is further south on the avatar, i am taking my time passing the mid section! laugh.gif
cubanPete41
Ha! I'm only allowed to climb one peak nowadays (pun intended) dry.gif

I think I know what kind of tracks you're looking for; let me see if I can prepare a couple of compilations for you. Any particular format (WAV/MP3)? Let me know.

Skol!
C.S
Thank u ,mp3 will be fine but i will have to let you know what address to send them to later. 042.gif
