Noddy, Jim, Dave & Don just down the road in Wolverhampton are the kings of Christmas.
Shame about the dodgy accents though......
The Waitresses did a good one as well.

All I want for christmas - Mariah Carey is great, but for me it has to be White Christmas by Darlene Love from the Phil Spector Christmas Album

OK, I must be the only one to detest pretty much all the xmas output. Having said this, there are exceptions: I love Ella Fitzgerald's rendition of the Christmas song, and Frank Sinatra's version of Jingle Bells is fun, as is Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt and Let it snow by Dean Martin.
And don't even think of getting me started on Cliff, Angels or any carols!!!

I like Springsteen's Santa Clause is Coming to Town best ('cos it's got drums and guitars in probably!) but I do like The Waitresses as well. Avid Merrions song of a couple of years ago is probably the best we've had for a few years but, like Steve, I'm a big fan of Brian Setzer and his two Christmas albums are just great!

My personal fav is JBJ - version of Please Come Home For X-mas , only cause Cindy Crawford was in the vid - LUCKY B$*&@~D.? But out and about M Carey's All I Want is really popular and you cant really beat a bit of NODDY and the Boys .

I think the Nat King Cole version of this is absolutely superb. I love Ella's vocal style but for that particular track Cole absolutely nails it
The only other decent xmas tracks are Pogues/Kirsty and the Mariah one, although the girlies also love Last Xmas.

I wonder whether anyone on here has heard the original of this track which was written and recorded by Judge Dread? but never actually released, cos his record company at the time (Creole records) said it wouldn't sell. Luckily for me, at that time I was good mates with a guy that worked at Creole and he gave me it on cassette (this was the mid 80's) which I still have to this day

As far as I know it was never pressed on vinyl and wasn't included on any of Judge dreads albums.
Kevin Bloody Wilson didn't really change much from the original (apart from the accent of course!)
I transferred it to mp3 a few years ago but rarely find the nerve to actually play it at a gig

when I have played it though it's always caused an equal measure of hilarity, amazement and curiosity from the people who know the KBW version.

I don't think Judge Dread would have included the line about thongs in the context that Wilson used (Flip flops)

It would be so cool to trade popular Christmas songs across the pond!
I have heard many that were mentioned but many more I have not had the pleasure of hearing.
Shakin' Stevens is awesome but I have none of his Christmas stuff.
Best version of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has got to be by a band by the name of Vince Vance & The Valients. The female singer actually nails it far better than Mariah & nearly every time I play it someone comes up and asks for info on the cut! Check it out on Itunes.
I've never heard "Fairytale of New York" but I'll look it up.
Two songs I have always searched for & never found are...
1: "The Bell That Couldn't Jingle"- Bobby Helms
2: "Ding-A-Ling The Christmas Bell"- Lynn Anderson
I keep my Christmas Songs up-tempo for the most part and lately I limit them to the first hour of the event.
Some selections wouldn't even work in the UK but here is a short list:
1. "When It's Christmas Time In Texas"- George Strait
2. "Feliz Navidad" - Jose Feliciano
3. "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" - Dion or Brenda Lee
4. "Sleigh Ride"- Ventures
5. "Hard Candy Christmas" - Dolly Parton (slow song, but good)
6. "Mary's Boy Child" - Boney M (I'm probably the only one in TX. to play this...LOL
7. "Jingle Bell Rock" - Bobby Helms
8. "Carol Of The Bells" -The Calling
9. "All I Want For Christmas Is Real Good Tan" - Kenny Chesney
10. "Merry Christmas Strait To You" - George Strait
11. "Blue Christmas" - Elvis Presley
12. "Grandma Got...." - The Rovers (by request only
13. Another slow one...."White Christmas" - Vince Gill
The sad thing about Christmas music is all of the old standards have been covered so many times and very little creativity is put into new albums by artists. Years ago when George Straits album came out it was so refreshing because their were 2 good new original dance songs and more on it (again I know that means little in the UK) but there have been so few treasures like it.
The Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers Duet album was another great one.
Think about it...if you could write a great new Christmas song that became extremely popular you would be set for life! Please keep it up-tempo....ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!

The tracks that seemed to go down best with the punters again this year were:
(as a dance track): Mariah Carey: All I want for Christmas....(Cued past all the accappella stuff to the point where she sings "Yooouuu....").
(as an ender...): Kirsty McCall and that awful band: Fairytale of New York (again...boring accappella/slow drawl removed/cued past).
Slade, judging by dancefloor reactions, and live voting seems to be losing a lot of ground in the last couple of years - but, it seems, if you cue past those first few dreary 8 bars, staight into the vocals of "are you 'anging out your stocking...(or whatever they are), the reaction is less negative.
Personal favs: Driving home for Christmas.....(preferably Chris Rea)....and definately The Waitresses: Christmas Wrapping...

I cue it past the intro as well and thinking ahead to Christmas 2007 I'll try to obtain a copy of the version Gary (in Texas) mentions.

I leave the intro on this one as it always receives a cheer once people recognise the 1st few bars.
PS I can think of many bands that deserve the accolade 'awful' but not the Pogues

I agree withg the usual fare but try All alone for Christmas by Darlene Love. I fairly small hit from the movie Home Alone 2. The punters seem to enjoy this one at the end if they are up for the Christmas stuff. I've played it several times.

Yes, I leave the piano intro on this too, a you say, it's a recognisable aide-memoir...I just splice out all that "drunk tank/won't see another one" meander.
As for "awful", I was mainly referring to the group visually, and in habit terms.

they're ok musically...
