For those that are already into PC based Mp3 programs, then here is a very short and basic review of an update to the highly used DJ orientated software PCDJ.
Called PCDJ FX, it carries a lot of the features already in PCDJ but with a few new extra features that are, in my opinion, excellent for the dance style or club style DJ presentation.
Without trying to be too technical - the software has a similar feel to PCDJ but now includes a better defined virtual record case, module optiions of Mixer, which includes cross fader, Virtual Player Volume Control, Main & Cue Volume Controls, 3 Band Paramatic EQ effects (handy to use as a 'punch in' kill switch for that 'stand out from the crowd drop the bass effect!', onboard Compressor to boost audio output, Effects that can be switched live during a set - variable mix effects of Echo, Chorus, Reverb & Flange. (These include 10 presets that create a multitude of audio fx possibilities over the tunes!)
The clever live loop editor has presets that allow near excellent looping (as described as on the fly).
You could 'sound' like Fat Boy Slim - on any tune in your live presentation, very professional in the production quality output. If you understand beats, measures and timing - you'll love it!!!
Apart from some of the existing features of PCDJ's cue-point editing, the software has been re-designed and greatly improved over the PCDJ.
You can even change the 'skin' (representation of the display) which I think is a general feature of low budget mp3 playes.
But does it work with the DAC 2 controller???
The simple answer is yes!
For those unfamilier with this - it's a USB connected device that looks and feels like a modern conventional player. It has digital readout of track remaining times, onboard info, etc.
Designed to be multi-functional - it will need a few practices of getting to know all the buttons multi functions, but it is usebable.
In fact, it makes operating the software a dream - even compatable with the PCDJ software.
In essence, from a DJ point of view - I'm not going to say rush out and buy it now because not everybody likes PCDJ.
There are many other Mp3 players available on the market which are quite good!
It's an individual thing really - any PC system be it Laptop or Desktop can only enhance a DJ's position but again, it depends on how you use it.
But I think one thing worth noting is that although Mp3's are great to reduce your library of CD or Record tracks into one little box - it could make you 'lazy' as an entertainer!!!!
For instance - recently, I did a function where I only touched the decks 3 times during a 3 hour gig.
I'd just upgraded the decks - but ended up using the laptop all night.
What a waste of money?! No - its a novelty thing for me at the moment!!!!!!
If the Laptop had suddenly crashed - I have the back-up of the decks!!!!!!!!!!
There will always be something about using vinyl or handling CDs during a gig!!!!!!
