Unless you are left in charge of these children, why should you need it?

You dont need it to do the school disco as the children are not your responsability.. and you cant CRB check your self so its kind of pointless..

You'll probably find this more and more - especially with the media hype surrounding sex pests and what not..
I've been booked for a string of teenagers birthdays (9 or 10 in total I think) all because I'm one of the only DJ's locally that is CRB checked and this got passed around the parents.
Might not need it, but that's just gained me a rather nice wedge of ££ because I do have one..

Nim has a point though, knowing local authorities there has probably been some new legislation being passed by the PC brigade of some Local Councils to ensure that all contractors used by Schools have CRB approved staff, regardless.
Some PTA's are entirely OTT, i've had some schools ban glowsticks, and even arranging games for the kids in case it gets them 'hyperactive' and they hurt themselves
Technically although the kids are not your responsibility you are working with them, which is one of the remits of the actual CRB policy.
If you do a lot of work for one particular school and are on good terms with them, then why not ask them to to carry out a CRB check for you?, it will prove goodwill on your part even if they don't require actually it, and it will solve the problem for you at any future events if you are asked the question.

my wife works in a private day nursery and she is CRB checked, has to be for her job...
My daughters school was looking for parent help to assist with the cycle test thingy schools do. My wife offered to help because she is crb checked. The school refused as she wasn`t crb-ed through the school.. Load of bull

if you ask me...
Anyway the school has now paid for her to be crb-ed so she can help in the future.
Waste of money and time.

Exactly, I do school disco's, I am not responsible for the children the PTA are and if they are concerned it is up to them to check you out.

I'm only talking about Scotland, but I believe it's the same down south. You only require to be checked if you are working UNSUPERVISED with children. Depending on their age, the ratio of adult to child goes from 1:3 to 1:10, so the main thing to remember with doing any party for children is that the people organising the party should remain in the room AT ALL TIMES, preferably with the correct ratios. You are providing entertainment, not child-minding.
Question. If there were insufficient supervision and something happened to a child, what would be the situation re PLI???
I don't know the answer and you MODS may think this important enough to move it to a thread of it's own.

It wouldn't affect the DJ's PLI. The accident would have to happen due to the negligence of the DJ for a claim to be made against the DJ. If there was a lack of supervision, that would be a claim against the Schools/organisers PLI. There is a remote chance that a claim could be made against the DJ for contributory negligence in continuing to perform even though there was a lack of supervision, but unlikely.

CRB
It is to check if you have a criminal record or included on POVA, POCA or 99 Lists.
POVA is
HEREand you can search the site for the others.
You are more and more likely to be asked for a CRB check if you are going to work with children or vulnerable adults. The Laws are tightening up.
If you have any history of violent crimes, theft or serious driving offences they must be reported on the CRB form.
If you are employed in this sector. For most staff ...No CRB = No job... if you are working and you have not got one you and your employer are breaking the law.

As far as i'm aware each organisation requires it's own CRB, I'm CRB checked with the youth service, but it is not acceptable with schools, same as if i went to another area and worked in a youth club i would require their CRB check.
it's bureaucracy gone mad.
have fun

I have a CRB enhanced disclosure check thing, it was paid by me (about £40) but instigated by the scouts, as my kids' cubs required it as a parent helper (forced volunteer

).
So, if you have kids in the scouts/beavers/gudes/cubs/whatever, get forcibly volunteered!

Am sure I only pay £12 for 3 yrs for the taxi`s. I may be wrong as when we renew our badges we have to do the crb as well. So you pay for the badge and crb at the same time.
