Hello peoples 042.gif

I have just decided to make a network of two computer's in my house, one's a normal box PC, the other a laptop (both operate on xp fear.gif -says it all really-LOL).

I've noticed that there is a wizard for connecting the two together, but can I get the bloody thing to work!!! I have bought a 50ft cable (CAT5e), plugged into the LAN connector.

Both computer's seem to ignore each other, so say network cable unplugged. 188.gif

Could any of you help me out notworthy.gif

IM THE MAN TO SPEAK TO LOL

You cant connect the 2 machines together by a piece of cat5 cable just like that!!

Assuming you want to connect just the 2 machines together you need a cross over cable which has some of the pins changed around inside so not making it possible to use the normal patch cable as u have bought!!

If you want to connect 2 or more computers together then you need a Hub/Switch!!

Then you can use the patch cables then the crossover cable becomes obsolete

Theres the main prob for you to start

Any more let me know as i got a network running here

cheers

I am about to undertake something similar.

I have broadband internet connection, and my son & daughter both have PC's in their rooms, 1 is a laptop, the other a PC.

I want to connect both to the internet via my connection

question, how is the best way to do this?

thankyou please

Right all if you want help let me know

Right to connect the broadband to the 3 machines you need a ADSL Router like i use.

A good one is the D-link DSL-504 which i use and is excellent. These cost around £100 and are well worth the money!!

Any more help problems contact me here or whatever you wanna do

Cheers

Have you got a link to buy one of these crossover cables?

Give this a quick go.

Linktastic

Other companies may be cheaper like Dabs.com

you could always use an old pc as a proxy server (you will still need a hub or switch to share the connection) try www.smoothwall.org you can also use it as a DHCP server so your networked pc will obtain an internal IP address so it can connect through it . Easy as.

If anyone needs networking help just shout.

Oh if you have XP by the way try using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) it has a wizard to help set it up and is fairly easy.
