I've got a Wedding for a family member on Saturday. I've offered to do it for nothing but she is offering me a fee to make her feel better about asking me. Or should I say offering me a fee because she knows full well that i'll turn it down. Maybe I should call her bluff and accept her offer. Sunday sees be doing a gig for a Manchester Charity which is another freebie, so lots being earned this weekend. censored.gif

Anybody else get locked into the endless loop of non profit family and charity gigs

In nearly 8 years ive only done 3 free gigs call me tight unsure.gif but its my only income so i have to charge, of course i give friends a family a big discount!

Once did a 'freebie' for my nephews birthday and ended up with a £30 parking ticket.
As for your Saturday I alway do it as a wedding present, although my wife ends up doing the cake as a wedding present too, so they get £00's off us.

I always go to close friends weddings and book the night off!

Do the disco......save on a present !!!

Chris will agree with me on this one as he is a tight as I am !!. It's called old age and experience.

Aha thats where you are wrong you see!.

(1) I'm not as old as you (Thankfully)

(2) I've done my share of family & friends freebies...plus a vast majority of charity gala's and gigs mainly for a Manchester Sick Childrens Hospice (Passed to Josh this year, since I'm at the Plasa!) .

A few weeks ago, as most of the regulars will know, I did the Next Door Neighbours Wedding for nowt (thats free to non northerners!). Well, I actually did it as a Wedding Present, since my limit to shopping consists of browsing the Amazon Website and a weekly shop at Sainsbury's smile.gif .

During September I'm doing the parents anniversary of a friend of mine. I'm doing this one for free, since Ian has helped me a hell of a lot in the past and during the time I was ill, so i've no problem with this. However, his parents insist that they pay something towards the Disco.

The Solution:- I insisted on doing the actual gig for free, however I suggested that his parents make a donation to the above mentioned charity in the name of DJU, for services provided. This way, I'm happy, his parents don't feel guilty about not paying, and a charity gets a donation - Everybody is happy. smile.gif

Exactly, the Disco IS your present to your family member...

Stick a large bow and a gift tag on one of the speakers, just to make the point. biggrin.gif

I would rather give em a £20 quid toaster , and then go out and earn my £200 or whatever !!

£180 up rather than £200 down laugh.gif

Yeh I am a true Scot ! laugh.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif

But you need to go to the wedding anyway so you couldn't be out earning money so in fact you are now £20 down.

I would send the wife to represent me at the wedding , and go out working laugh.gif

I just feel that if the person is a really close friend/family i won't really be able to enjoy the function if im dj'ing but each to there own i can understand why you would want to. i used to dj all my old work partys before i went full time so i could go to the party and get paid.

I did the disco at my own wedding for free (well part of it anyway) laugh.gif

At our wedding the disco was free, the wedding cake was made by the missus, my brother-in-law is a chauffeur with the car, my brother is a photographer, so all FREE !!! As for the meal that was a present too.

Call me stingey if you want, I prefer just lucky.

So when my brother got married it was the same, as when my sister got married too.

I know I mentioned this before but it was so long ago it got lost amongst the threads somewhere,

I always but always with friends and family tell them it is my only source of income and i have a mortgage etc to pay just like them. My normal fee is x amount and that is what I expect to paid for my services. If 'I' then decide to give them £10, £30, £50, back as a wedding / birthday present that is my business, but nobody ends up offended, embarassed or out of pocket.

Just my 4d worth
