Professional Mobile Disco & Wedding Disco
r0bski
Hi Guys,

A brummie here looking to step into the world of mobile DJ. I have done a little 'disco' style club dj'ing, along with some dance/drum & bass sets too. I'm looking to start us a mobile DJ, offering family parties and weddings etc.

I'm more into the mainstream sounds now, instead of the club sounds, therefore decided now is a good time to move over. I have a fair few cd's to get me started etc, and already have turntables and mixer, that i share with my housemate.

I'm looking to spend around £1200 (this is slightly variable) and lookign for the ideal setup to suit an audience of around 100-125 people (that sixe hall) and hopefully, an evening a week in our local pub.

SO, some lights, CD decks and mixer, amps and speakers etc.

I have seen a couple of these posts before on here (yes i have looked around) but just like the top 40 charts, things change on a weekly basis.

(i dont know if i'm being old fashioned, but i do like a nice light feature in front of the DJ, to go with the lights on the stands smile.gif )

any help apprciated guys.

Also - i know this is a 'tongue and cheek' question, but i have not got a clue what a half decent DJ charges these days. I used to get anything between £80 and £150 doing club sets ... any guidelines of what you guys charge would be appreciated.

and btw - sweet forum guys, looks like a very nice comunity we have here

Here's an idea that I used to build my son a custom booth:

The base is made of 3 MDF panels: 2-19" width x 36" height ( approx 48 cm x 91 cm for the rest of the world on metric system) panels on sides, hinged to a front panel 40" wide x 36" high (102 cm x 91 cm). The hinges allow it to fold for easy travel. The 3 panels are covered in shiny black "formica" (I don't know if you Brits call it the same thing?). Next, I made a square box, 46" (117 cm) wide x 22" (56 cm) deep x 6" (15 cm) high, which is placed on and overhangs the base. This top is carpeted in black and has cut-outs for Numark Beatkeeper, a gooseneck flourescent light, grommets for passing cables and wires, etc.

The best part (here is the kicker) is that I connected 12" green cold cathode lights underneath the removable top. These are wired to a 12 volt wall adapter (1 amp) which hides in the shelving that mounts to the folding base (also holds amps, etc.).

A toggle switch installed in the top fires-up the cathode lights and the effect is an eerie green glow all around the black booth (which, being formica, reflects the glow).

The whole thingy is very light and portable, but quite impressive. I'll try to capture a digital image and post it in the forum.

Cheers! 042.gif

042.gif Paula,

Just took a look at an iBall in person, as there is a dealer right here in Miami (5 blocks from my office). This thing is waaay cool. Price here about $1,100 (US), which would be £690, including software.

By The By, here is a delightful recipe for Bacardi:

Crush some mint leaves, put in highball glass
Add 1 teaspoon sugar
Crushed ice
Fill 1/2 with Bacardi Silver (or 151, if you so dare!)
Top off with soda water (fizzy stuff)
Stir
Drink...Make another.

It's a "Mojito" (pronounced "moe HEE toe" and the national drink of Cuba (sort of a latin mint julep). pepsi.gif

OK Mates, here are images of dj booth with cathode lights which I built for my son:

The top has built-in flourescent gooseneck light, carpeted, grommet for cables. The base has plexiglass front (for mirror look) which covers roadshow logo (The Sound Matrix) and folds inward on hinges.

Here is a closer look at base. The twin 12" cathode tubes are attached about 4 inches (you blokes do the metric conversion!) below the top edge and wiring runs through to the inside where they connect to the 12V inverter. The inverter connects to a standard 12V power adapter (1 amp) with male/female molex 4-pin plug (as in PC power supply).

user posted image

This is the back of base. The detachable shelf holds (for now) an 1800W Pyramid amp with plenty of room for more stuff. It will soon be covered in black carpeting and perhaps I'll add another shelf for ? The shelf also serves to reinforce the base, keeping it from closing inadvertantly. Notice the rocker switch near the middle of the top: this turns the cathode lights on/off.

A view from the top. The kid simply places his coffin case on top, runs power and connector cables through the grommet and is good to go (2 Stanton S-250 CD decks and a Stanton Pro 30 mixer with fader start - not bad for a starter set, ey?).

user posted image

Here is the thingy lit up (so was Dad after building this!). The reflection toward the bottom is the inserts in my tile floor, because the bugger shines like a mirror.

Here is the aspiring dj cueing up some GOD-AWFUL hip-hop at his custom booth. Notice the eerie green glow - in keeping with the whole "Matrix" theme.

Cheers to all tongue.gif

Jorge,

You are using Photoisland to host your images, and they don't allow remote linking of images to other sites or forums.

If you want to email them to me at chris@dj-supplies.co.uk then i'll upload them to our server and add them to your post for you. smile.gif

Actually, ceramic tile...but still needs mopping. That's why we have 2 cats: dip 'em in a bucket of sudsy water and drag the buggers across the floors (takes care of bathing 'em too!). laugh.gif

I assume when we talk about cathode lighting, here in the UK we would mean the sort of strips they use under customised cars??? Mind you it gives me a great idea for a 2' UV and reactive paint!

Maybe I wont need that Star Screen after all, and it would fit in nicely with all them light screens!!

Hello, Dr.

Yes, these are similar to the lights used to light up the underside of cars (I'm glad to see we yanks don't have a monopoly on bad taste!). But those are typically neon. These lights are far brighter, have a life of about 15 years (let's see, you'll be how old then?) and are used to light up computer cases. They also maintain a cooler temperature than neon or flourescent lights. They do indeed come in UV and there are some with a built-in mike that flash to the beat of music.

At around $15 US (I reckon about £8) they are an inexpensive way to add a unique look to any roadshow gear. Here is a link to the site were I purchased mine:

By the way, the whole booth cost about $50 (~£30) to put together and the boy should really stand out when he makes his debut.

Speaking of which, is it just mine or do all teenagers believe they were born knowing everything? I insist that he practice, practice, practice until he develops that ear for the breaks and the bpm's. Yet he thinks he can mix a reggea track ~ 80 bpm into a techno track around 150 bpm! When I tell him he has to gradually build the tempo, he says "Dad, I know how to do it!"

I think the boy needs to chat with some of you chaps (and birds - Paula), because I am obviously a cretin.

Cheerio! patriot.gif

He can do an 80 and a 160 though! They are all like it Pete, pain in the ..... and hes going to be taller, better looking, richer and smarter than you, dont worry ive got an 18 year old one and am willing to trade.Paula ,whats wrong with wooden floors? ive got em and i love em, we dont mop we use wax cloths!
