ok, was just using my computer, when the power to the tower (no pun intended), cut out... pressed the power button a few times... nothing happened, but the monitor was still powered up.... i switched the IEC cable from the tower with the iec cable from the monitor, and suddenely, both work.... huh.gif

Thought the cable may have been dodgy, so i wiggled it a bit... it works fine.... so why the power cut to the tower and nothing else???

Had something (button/icon) just been clicked on at the time that the tower switched off?

Most modern towers have "Soft off" power supplies - which means that the software itself can tell the power supply to switch off - either when you meant it to eg: Closing down the system at the end of the day, or when you dont want it to, during a system crash.

i had just walked back into the room, sat on the chair, and it went...

sounds like the psu went into protected mode...

removing the power cable let it reset..

your psu is doing its job by protecting your computer from what ever caused it or its being pushed too hard and decided to give up...

it could be a sign of a hardware problem or it could just be a one off...

keep an eye on it and see if it happens again

I think marc is right.

1 brand of PC that we used for a while at work would frequently do this. It was a case of just unplug it from the mains for 5 seconds and it would work again.

also, if you were at a gig at it was a hot night these things can turn themselves off it they get too hot.

Remember, just like any light effect, clean fans!!!

Never touch fans, you will damage them, blast of compressed air is really the only way.

If a fan is making a noise, normally it will be spinning slower and on its way out
(maybe not today... blah blah blah)

Replace when necessary

Glitches and interference on the mains can do this.

I would recommend a filtered mains extension lead for your PC.

I always use one with my PC and my disco sound equipment.

before i got a new mains extension the fridge switching on and off would crash my MP3 player.
Not good if I had been out on a gig !
You should be bale to get one for a £10 ish depending on how many sockets you want.
