Every now and then you come across a tune that you think is superb and for whatever reason it doesn't get pushed/marketed by the record company and doesn't sell at all or even worse doesn't even get released.
One such tune from around 1985 by a band called "Mercy Mercy" called "What Are We Gonna Do About It". I got in a promo 12" at the time from Bluebird records and thought it was superb. As far as I know it was never actually released. In the last 20 years I think I may have heard it played on radio/clubs twice, today being one of them huh.gif I was listening to Solar Radio around 11am today when they played it, I was absolutely amazed, especially when the presenter Tony Munson (A superb DJ/presenter with an amazing knowledge of soul music) said it was a classic one-hit wonder from 1985!
As I mentioned, I'd always loved the song but had sometimes began to question whether it really was good cos no one else seemed to know it even people who had a great soul knowledge wacko.gif so hearing those words today were re-assuring smile.gif
I'd guess that no one on here knows this tune?

Anyone else have a tune they've always loved that hardly anyone knows?

I have a few in my mind:
  • Chi-lites - Changing for you
  • Montana Sextet - Heavy vibes
  • Roy Ayers - Everybody loves the sunshine
All these have had some success, if I hear them they make me feel warm all over smile.gif

However, unreleased stuff includes a lot of music from a local band we used to follow called Line Design. Some members went on to form Macavity's Cat who were mental and had some success on the London circuits! cool.gif Line Design made a cassette that a few of us still have full of great tunes.

huh.gif ermmm, none of them are really that obscure geeze 533.gif ... I mean even Smooth FM plays all of those rolleyes.gif

Yep agreed, but obscure to the pop eating world today....

Hence why I suggested Line Design....

I bought a load of promos from a dealer friend a few years ago and amongst them was "Stomp ( Booker T Spiritual House Mix) " by God's Property, dating from 1997.

I love it but have no idea if anyone else knows it well.
Eskie
Never heard of it 533.gif

God's Property are ( or were anyway ) a young Texas-based Gospel choir. I think they were part of the Nu Nation project. Promo is on Universal.

Another promo I have and like a lot is "Optimistic" by Sounds of Blackness from 1992.

But is it well known - not that many people I speak to have heard of Sounds of Blackness let alone the recording?

God's Property, by the way, remind me of East 57th Street who did "Saturday".

Sounds of Blackness are the biz!

Plenty of great music from them:

Everything is gonna be alright
I believe
I'm going all the way
Try

All feel good and excellent!

I don't think I have any tunes that I love that other people don't know - but there seems to be a lot of tunes that other people love that I've never heard of bigstar.gif
BigBen
Three sprang to mind but I don't think any meet your [strict!] criteria Tone
Leif Garret - I Was Made for Dancing
Clout - Substitute
City Boy - 5705

Then I dug a bit deeper and remembered wonderful tunes from The Quireboys - 7 O'Clock and Whale - Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe.

Possible inclusion for The Dropkick Murphy's too. Some excellent singalong tunes (Spicy McHaggis Jig, Kiss Me I'm Sh*tfaced) but a little too raucous for your average mobile jock!

I have one.

"Don't make me wait too long"

Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway

circa 1980

Apes Pigs & Spacemen - Do I need this
Raging Slab - Pearly
the Prisoners - Melanie
theLiving End - Prisoner of society

Are some that spring to mind that I doubt if anyone on here has heard of

This does not surprise me...I think it's safe to say we share an interest in similar musical styles Steve! 042.gif

I was early for the wedding reception I did last night so played at a low volume whilst the evening guests were arriving.

One of the tracks I played was another that I like particularly but most people ( I think ) will not know.

It's A Namorada by Carlinhos Brown. Does anyone else know it?

Nope, went over my head so fast I thought it was a low flying aircraft biggrin.gif

Big Ben, (in the words of Penry the mild mannerd janitor) Could be biggrin.gif
Eskie
Nope, not familiar with the Naminho or Propaganda tacks wacko.gif
Just thought of another track that I used to love that was on the B-side of an EP by Madness. "Don't quote me on that". Seeing as Madness were so successful it's more likely that at least a couple of people on here will know it 533.gif
I used to really like this track, had some funny lyrics, and the last three words repeated at the end of the song became a much repeated catchphrase for me and a few mates for a while tongue.gif ...we'll see if anyone is familiar with the song before revealing what this catchphrase was rolleyes.gif because someone else will probably be able to reveal it!

It's all eggs bacon beans & a fried slice biggrin.gif

Yep, that is the song, but they weren't the final 3 words sang at the end smile.gif ...

It ends like this:
"Are you sure you turned that tape recorder off"
"Are you SURE?"

with a real emphasis on the word sure. We were forever going round saying Are you sure too all sorts of unrelated things wacko.gif but then in my defence I was about 16 at the time rolleyes.gif
Corabar Steve
I was getting to that! biggrin.gif

There's one hell of an echo on that last sure!

Got the original 7" EP too! The song was written because the papers were misquoting them. Being skinheads they were getting a really bad press.

Fantastic song, fantastic EP (Night Boat to Cairo FFS!!), fantastic band!
Ian Stewart
The Live Band - A Chance for Hope
Chic - Chic Cheer
Hindsight - Small Change
Misty Oldland - A Fair Affair

Tune.. and of course sampled by Faith Evans and then Fatman Scoop.

Not a dance tune, but a really cheezy end of disco smoochie for the end of the night is:
Selena - I Could Fall In Love
Another daft one is Hot Banditoz - Veo Veo (kind-of The Ketchup Song meets Agadoo, only worse) T'would be grrrrrreat for kids tho'.

Now I bet you've all heard of them, but you'll all be too ashamed to own up to it

See, I've reached that time of life where I don't care any more biggrin.gif
