At my gig on saturday night I got asked to play Mash Potato from Dirty Dancing.

Now I have the soundtrack album with all of the tracks from the film and can find no such track.

There is a track on the album called Trot the Fox but I took an quick listen to that track through the headphones and am pretty sure it was not that one.

Anyone got any ideas?

The only song I can think of is

Do You Love me - The contours (from Dirty dancing)

You broke my heart,
'Cause I couldn't dance.
You didn't even want me around,
And now I'm back, to let you know,
I can really shake 'em down.

Do you love me?
(I can really move)
Do you love me?
(I'm in the groove)
Ah,Do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Now that I can dance,
(Dance).

Watch me now,
Oh,(work, work).
Oh, work it all baby,
(Work, work).
Well, you're drivin' me crazy,
(Work, work).
With a little bit of soul now,
(Work).

I can mash-potato,
(I can mash-potato).
And I can do the twist,
(I can do the twist).
Now tell me baby,
(Tell me baby).
Do you like it like this?
(Do you like it like this?)
Tell me,
(Tell me),
Tell me.

Do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Now that I can dance,
(Dance).

Watch me now,
Hey,(work, work).
Oh, shake it up, shake it.
(Work, work),
Oh, shake 'em, shake 'em down.
(Work, work),
Oh, little bit of soul now.
(Work).

(Work, work),
Oh, shake it, shake it baby.
(Work, work),
Oh, you're driving me crazy.
(Work, work),
Oh, don't get lazy.
(Work).

I can mash-potato,
(I can mash-potato).
I can do the twist,
(I can do the twist).
Well now tell me baby,
(Tell me baby).
Do you like it like this?
(Do you like it like this?)
Tell me,
(Tell me),
Tell me.

Do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
(Now, now, now).

(Work, work),
Oh, I'm working hard baby.
(Work, work),
Well, you're driving me crazy.
(Work, work),
And don't you get lazy.
(Work).

(Work, work),
Oh, hey hey baby.
(Work, work),
Well, you're driving me crazy.
(Work, work),
Don't you get lazy
(Work).

Dee Dee Sharp recorded "Mashed Potato Time"

and James Brown did "Mashed Potatoes USA".

The Mashed Potato was a 60's dance craze along with the Dog, Hully Gully, Fly, Twist, Watusi, Jerk, Twine, Block, Shake, Pony, Locomotion, Bird, Hitch-Hike etc.

Yes, I would say "Do You Love Me".

Another Dirty Dancing question:

A few weeks ago I was asked for the song that starts with the talking: "How do you call your lover boy...".

The guest didn't know the title or how the song goes, and I couldn't remember which song it was. (I can vaguely remember the bit from the film where they mime that intro.)

However neither of my two Dirty Dancing albums have that intro on a track.

Was the intro edited off of the track on the album, is this song not on the sound track albums?

It's "Love is Stange" - Mickey & Sylvia

Oddly enough I saw Do you love me by the Contours on the Cd and thought about playing it but decided not too. Later in the evening I changed my mind but played the version by Brian Poole and Tremeloes instead.

I have never noticed the Mash Potato reference in it before.

Thanks Spinner.
Now I know, I don't know how I didn't know. (Does that make sense?) stupid.gif
Of course it is on the album, and I have played it in the past, but I will have to get it out and see if it has the intro.

At the time of the request, I listened to the intro of each track through the headphones and didn't hear it. Maybe I missed it.

It's not part of the intro - it comes in after the first verse/chorus

Ahh, that will be why!

Thanks again for the help.

The contours is on the "motown gold" album, which i'd say is a 'Djs must have' album.. only £8.99 too..
