Ok, so i have got a wedding to be at to set up by 4pm. Its in a marquee, so i decide to take my two amps rather than just the one powering 4 speakers. But a slight snag, one of them won't power up. Have checked the fuse in the plug and the quickblow on the IEC inlet, all fine there. Can anyone give me any other possible things it could be which i can check/repair within the next 2 hours. If not, im going to be running my Ohm RWS's off a 1.6kw amp!! fear.gif

Thanks in advance guys!

Thankfully, at the last minute, a very good mate of mine, came to the rescue and loaned me an amp for the evening, free of charge! And everything worked great, has been an amazing night, dance floor full and even had people dancing as they queued for the buffet! tongue.gif

The amp that went funny on me, is a Crest Ca6, only bought it recently off a mate who claimed it had been fully serviced and tested! Im going to have a good look at it tomorrow, and hopefully find the fault... and its going to be something thats dead easy to repair *prays*! rolleyes.gif

yes, they are brill amps in my opinion!

Found the fault... the live wire connected to the kettle socket, on the inside of the unit must have had a break in it, and a simple bump in the van could have easily knocked it out of place.. well ive now replaced the wire, and its all working great! Just gotta have it PAT tested again now though! sad.gif

I would appreciate Superstar's commentary on whether as he put's it "posh amps" are supposed to be "road-proof" against things like this...I hear an awful lot of talk, from dealers about how the difference between one amp and another is partly the guage of steel used in the casing, how allegedly before one aging rock star's "biggest comeback gig ever" some drug crazed roady jumped out a window carrying an amp rack and it survived saving his career comeback ....you seem to hear all kinds of stories of a simliar fantastic vein about expensive amps.

Surely this goes against the grain of what Welshy has just experienced?

Where does truth lie? Any pointers you can give to road worthy amps would be welcome...and reliable amps also.

Edit: Post edited. Sorry for my previous spelling error in your name Welshy fear.gif

With any equipment, we can only come to the decision if a certain item is road worthy or not, once we have tried and tested it. Thats the only complete truth method of judgement.

My PSL 1201 has never failed me!
Same with my studiomaster 1600D, that has never failed me either!

Two brands that I repair on a very regular basis. I have a SM in at the mo and a PSL booked in on Tue.

It's normally very rare to have any faulty on the mains wiring, as this is the bit most carefully assembled as it has safety implications. Had the IEC inlet been changed before, maybe? The cables are normally wire-wrapped around the solder tags, often sleeved and can't physically fall off. How had it failed? To be fair alot of USA equipment uses quite brittle mains wiring but still, I've not come across this before.

honestly, im clueless as to how this happened, the solder tag connector was rather loose though!

I have my PSL serviced every year, maybe that is why it hasn't caused me any trouble yet 533.gif

OK, so here is an interesting one to throw into the mix.

I just got off the blower to a friend. He was playing in a club last night with a Martin Audio sound system. MA speakers, MA system control crossover thingy, Behringer DEQ2496, Behringer VMX1000, (Technics 1210s and SLDZ thingies for those that want the complete picture, but not really relevant).

The amps were Crown Macrotech, which always struck me as a rather good amp. Heavy, but good.

The Martin Audio system controller was set as a limiter.

The club manager said they had trouble the Macrotechs going into protect if they were run at more than 75%.

Odd?

Superstar or other informed advisors would be welcome to comment if you would be so kind....

Depends what they mean by protect. The Macrotechs have the ODEP system which emulates the output transistors and gradually reduces the system gain as the transistors heat up...so controlling the loading of the amp throughout the night.

The ODEP lights will come on when the system is normal, and flash with normal audio signal, and then slowly dim to off as the limits are reached. Some people think the ODEP lights are clip or trip lights..they aren't.

The Macrotech has several limiters fitted as standard, they are setup by concealed switches just under the front grille, most people dont even know about them as they arent labelled and can't be seen...only 'felt' with a probe.

As well as ODEP, it also has dynamic current limit (like the EV/Dynacord) so that, in theory, if you, for example short out the speakers or put too much load on there, the amp will limit itself just short of overload and do this all night if necessary.

They may have blocked or stuck fans or filters or something daft like that!

The Macrotechs have not got their bombproof reputation lightly!!!!!!!

Having said that, I have a Macrotech 5000VZ in at the moment which blew up during a soundcheck for Tall Paul...I'm sure he was not impressed. Still, it's 12 years old and used every night to its limits.
