Hi Elliot,
I have just bought the Stairville DMX-Master 1 controller from Thomann in Germany, cost about £75 including postage from Germany, see here
http://www.thomann.de/thoiw2_stairville_dm...i_prodinfo.html it has exactly the same spec as the Chuavet DMX 50 controller at £195 see here
http://www.djkit.co.uk/acatalog/Chauvet_.html the only difference is that with the Stairville you will have to budget for a 9-12 volt 500mA transformer as the one supplied has a continental plug on it. My transformer cost £7, works great.
As I understand it there are about 5 identical DMX controllers, all rebadged versions of the same one with prices including shipping from £75 to about £250.
You pay your money and take your choice.
Hope this helps, Eddie.

I think this may be your only sticking point.
My ideal would have been that if the controller was on, then it would control the lights - switch the controller off and the lights do their own thing.
Unfortunately it doesn't work that way as you have to set the dip switches on the lights for the correct DMX channels. On all my lights, as soon as I set the dip switch to run the lights internal programs, it stops them receiving external DMX signals.
So I'm now stuck with the choice of.
Set them up for dmx control and use the controller every time, or mess about with the dip switches, each time I want to change back to self running lights.
Luckily for me, after I bought the Stairville controller, I also bought a Soundlab Colourscan kit which includes a much smaller controller, so will probably use the Soundlab controller most of the time, and use the Stairville when I want to use the Joystick.

Sound-to-light when linked to a controller is possible, so long as the controller itself has either a built-in mic or sound input connector, which would normally link to the "Record Out" socket on your mixer.

The Stairville DMX Master 1 (and its cloned brothers) I gave you the link in an earlier post have both a built in microphone and also an audio input skt (phono).
I have not tried it in this mode yet so I can't comment on it's effectiveness.
