My cousin has decided she want to start DJ'ing. Fair doo's to her, she has invested in alot of CD's over the past few years, after i told her that her CD collection wouldn't cover a full night. She is really passionate about doing this now. I have given her a twin CD and mixer all nicely cased, and a handful of lights to start her off, but i don't currently have speakers and an Amp to loan her as i use all mine! She is on a tight budget as she has not had the gear to start working and earning the money. So can anyone advise on a pair of cheap speakers and Amp, with a reasonable sound. When i say tight budget, i mean tight!! She was looking in Maplins at the pro-sound range but i was told its not very good sound. I don't really want to say yes to her on gear if its gonna sound completely rubbish!

Thanks
Gary
Depending on local availability, I'd suggest that you cousin might want to look at hire-out of speakers and amps.

This way, your cousin is only encountering expence at the time of an actual gig, rather than paying out a good few hundred pounds. This makes sense especially, when considering that in the beginning of her DJ'ing career/hobby, the gigs may not be coming in all that thick'n'fast. At least with hire-out, your cousin only has to lay money out, when she's got money about to come in.

If DJ'ing is definately for her, then, after saving a chunk of each of her gig-funds for a few gigs, she'll be able to make a purchase.

What would also be a great opportunity for her at this stage is to make a note of each system she hires out and keep notes of which ones sounded good/bad, which wattages were enough for the local venues, which were struggling etc. All good intel for when she comes to buy.

How about a pair of Powered speakers from the likes of Alto...

they are 300w RMS and then there is no need for extra cost of AMPs

they come in at about £400 the pair and will cover most size gigs..

ok, thanks for the advice. I have allready looked into the hire of a System for her. The Cheapest rate going at the moment is £120, which at 1st, i don't think she will barely be making that! Has anyone ever heard of or used, a speakers make called "Cruise"? I have been offered a pair for £50 which i was going to buy as a present for my Cuz, but at that price, are they any good? Ive been told they are 15" 300w rms, but i cannot go and listen to them as they currently stored a gd few hundred miles from me!

I have just sold an almost new 200x200 watt amp on e-bay in a sleeve for £52.
Plenty of bargains around at that level.

Buy a cheap 2nd hand system yourself and hire it out to her on demand. You'll soon make your money back (and a tidy little profit too).

....and it never hurts to have extra equipment around anyway so even if you only hire it out a handful of times, you've basically got a 2nd (back up) system for free smile.gif

Thats not a bad idea! Thankyou
