Evening Folks
I have just purchased an 8 panel switcher for my lighting effects but need to know how to wire the male plug heads onto my effect lights?
All I need to know is what colour wire goes with which pin???

sorry for asking such a dim question.

take the IEC plug apart and you will notice its marked..
centre pin is earth (yellow and green one)
N is for nutral (blue one)
L is for live (brown one)

Nah - put them anywhere!
My IEC's plugs never had any labels, so had to look it up
Tip: solder them on if you can - the screws are useless.

Good man Marky thanks.
Now for question 2 (sorry) - At the moment my effect light plugs directly into the mains, so would it be better for me to renew the whole lead from the effect light with the female IEC lead on it? or should I remove the plug and connect that way? What would be easier?

If the existing lead is in good condition, then just take the plug off and put the IEC on (solder as per above post).
Putting an entire new lead on can take lots of time - many lighting effects are a sod to completely get into.
You'll probably have to detach a circuit board and remove the mini cable clamp

Ok cool, the only problem is I will need to extend the lead as the one on there at the moment is too short?

Hi mate just wired mine up last week. As they said, the plugs are either marked on the outside or on the inside (when opened) with N,L or E - or that funny sign! Earth is always the middle-top pin and the two others are live and neutral. I bought a length of cable some male and female plugs and made longer iec leads to reach from the switch pack to the lights.

One small confession, I wasted one or two plugs -cheap anyway- cause the damn screws and thread on the pins aint much cop on the ones I got. Next time I might get the soldering iron out as metioned above. Just cut the mains plug off your lights and stick your new iec plugs on instead.
ALL THE BEST!

don't go opening lights up unless your sure about what your doing...
just add a IEC plug to the end of the cable and make iec leads to plug in and extend it..

fit an IEC socket to each of your lights, cutting off or removing the current 13A plug! go to maplins or any electrical store and buy a roll of 0.75mm 3 core 6A cable (don't let em convince you to buy the rubberised as the PVC is good enough) and just cut the cable to the lenghs you require and fit a male IEC to one end and a female IEC to the other! I made a couple of 5 metres and a couple of 10 metres, so i always am prepared for any possible situation! Hope that helps. p.s, Check out ebay, you may save a few quid on connectors!
