At quite a few of the weddings I do there are guests who have travelled from Scotland.

There's the usual requests for Proclaimers even Bay City Rollers scared.gif and then specific songs such as Flower of Scotland & Loch Lomond.

For Flower of Scotland I have a version that someone described as the extended mix because it lasts almost 5 minutes and for Loch Lomond I only have one version by Runrig which is the live 6+ minutes one.

Ok I can always cut them short if necessary but at Sat nights gig I was thinking that I'm maybe not playing the best of what's available and also are there any other songs from this genre that would go down well 533.gif

I have some bagpipe music that I play earlier in the night for any Scottish guests who are present...along with Andy Williams! Later in the night I'll play Texas, Simple Minds and Big Country.

But I'm with you Paul, there must be something better out there.

Jimmy Shand is your man for traditional Scottish music, like Irish music you play traditional music in sets

Ie 3 slow waltz
3 fast waltz
3 quicksteps etc

There is more to Scottish music than Flower Of Scotland etc, also many markets have stalls that sell both Trad Scottish and Irish music....check them out and ask:)

Rel Records in Scotland is an excellent CD label they also do mail order...

Should give you some ideas.....

5star,

What you ahve mentioned is the normal stuff that I'd play up here (Aberdeen). Best version of FOS is the Corries one (as they penned it) and there is no real alternative to Runrig's Loch Lomond. Proclaimers are the only other group in that sort of popular/traditional genre that goes down well at 'mainstream' parties.

Or are you needing some ceilidh stuff? Something like a Strip the Willow is always popular later on in the night but few know how to do them without being able to call the steps (essential for weddings up here!), but I find with even a semi-lively crowd they work really well.

And if you are after background music then something like Wolfstone (a strange, but good IMO mix of fiddles, bagpipes and rock sounds) gets feet tapping early on!

Hope that kinda helps a bit!

Thanks for the info - it's always good to hear from people in the area concerned and glean some local input. headphone.gif

As Dod says knowledge of Scottish music is essential for weddings in Scotland and also some weddings in N.Ireland

Strip The Willow, the Dashing Sgt etc goes down a storm!

Not forgetting Letter from America now that's a great tune!
Dod
Not wanting to conflict with the above poster too much but I would stay clear of Jimmy Shand for traditional music. He is obviously a legend on the Scottish folk scene but there are some much better ceilidh bands for parties, with a much bouncier sound.
For a good selection try Scottish-Irish - prices are great and delivery time has always been good for me.

And "Letter from America" is one of those tracks that can leave them still singing at the end of the night when you are packing up! Pity it bugs me now but it's all about the punters.....

It really depends what kind of gig you are doing certainly for many weddings and functions in N.Ireland a good selection of traditonal and other Scottish music

There are a number of Scottish CD companies which will supply you with everything you need in the way of Trad etc

Here's one of them
