Full Version: Dilemma!!!

Oh hell....here's another dilemma for you sad.gif .

I thought I had Saturday night sorted, but it turns out that it is far from being straight forward sad.gif here's the problem:-

I have two bookings for the same night - not in itself a problem, since I cover one and my colleague Richard covers the other. However this week is slightly different. Problem- one booking is for my next door neighbours daughter, the other is for my fortnightly club spot.

The neighbours' Wedding has been booked for nearly 2 years, and long before I had the residency at the club, it's also a "freebie" - as a Wedding Present from me, since i've known her all my life.

Up until last week, I was going to do the club spot, and Richard and a new trainee would cover the Wedding Reception, however my Neighbour is a little upset by this since she obviously wants me to do the reception.

Getting Richard to do the club spot may or may not be a good plan either, since he hasn't worked there for 12 months, and doesn't know the crowd and the music - and they are an awkward lot.

So do I, do the club spot and risk upsetting the neighbour. Or do I choose the Wedding, and risk losing a fortnightly booking?.

arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 014.gif

My advice to u Mr P is that if i were in your position i would talk to the club owner explaining that you have family commitments that are important.Give richard the maximum of information possible and get him to do the club. Do not upset your neighbour, you have to live next door to them and a promise is a promise. Thats what i would do laugh.gif
YourBigEvent
This is one of the main reasons I changed my name from Andy's Discos to ADS, as people expect you to do all the bookings. You promised your neighbour a disco, did you promised you to do it personally, or did they just put two and two together ?
I personally would give up the fortnightly spot for one evening, explaining the situation to the owner, didn't you say he used to DJ. He might want to dabble again just once, then Richard can do your neighbours do and you can do a spot and enjoy the event too.
This has happened to me on numerous occasions and in fact I lost one wedding reception due to it, the bride and groom decided to have the hotel's DJ rather than me if I could not do it personally, unknown to them I am also the DJ at the hotel, so they will have the same DJ as I was going to put in there, only £20 more expensive as I was doing it as a favour and knocking a little off. I am tempted to turn up myself and rub it in a little.
The Spindoctor
You have to do the neighbours wedding, as previously stated you have to live next door to them (well until you make your 1st million and retire) the club is not going to be hurt by losing you for a week.

I would do the friends wedding. But is there anyway you can do a bit of both i.e do the times overlap at all you could maybe get the wedding going leave a hour or so before the end then go to the club and send richard back to finish the wedding. but if this is not at all possible id def do the wedding!
Dj SBD
I would do the neighbours wedding too. (just think of the revenge they would have on you 221.gif 221.gif )

Give Richard a list of the tune's that work well, or what you play alot there.
Paul Smith
If the functions are close together why not consider splitting your time between them. Failing this tell both parties that you can't do theirs and then pick the one that gives the worst reaction to actually do. At the end of the day somebody is gonna be upset so it's a case of damage limitation. It looks like you're between your avatar and the deep blue sea.

Other options:
1. Take a holiday - far away
2. Look into cloning
3. to$$ a coin
4. Pick the one YOU would prefer to do
DJ Spinko
The neighbour's wedding is a must even though it is a 'freebie'. Not only because you have known them for a long time but they are also the one who can ruin your reputation more than the club. Hell hath no fury etc...
Explain to the club owner the full sp, offer to reduce the rate for the night - money talks !, give Richard the full run down, I've covered a club and you really do need to know what is what, explain what songs are must plays and what are definite no-no's, they'll be some clever wag who'll ask for them.
If the wedding finishes early you can always head up for the residency.
Dj SBD
Chris, am I right in thinking that the club owner is also a DJ??? wacko.gif , if he/she is, you could get off lighter by telling him/her you have two booking's, he/she would understand your view as he/she would or may have had the same "dilemma"

i think there's enough he/she in that to confuse you wacko.gif biggrin.gif

Are you going back to your holiday in Taiwan a couple of years ago, all those 'ladyboys' before you met Dolly ?
kazzachi
o! (dilemma!) You knew that all along didnt you crispy! We are all agreed that you should do the neighbours wedding - put the other dj in and as everyone has suggested - give him a playlist - you could virtually tell him what and when to play to cover the whole evening - then go to the club manager - explain the situation (honesty is always the best policy) - and tell him that if he is at all unhappy with what the replacement DJ plays on the night then you wont charge (but of course you have ensured he will be playing exactly what is right for the club cos you have supplied him a play-list). Everyone is happy and no one is let down and your integrity remains intact.

Thanks for the replies...they were pretty much how I had imagined them to be...although I thought i'd let you folks advise ME for a change! thumbup.gif

Gigs come and go but friends / relatives and neighbours you rely on day in day out, so yep - i've taken the Wedding!. Richard, won't have any problem covering the gig, he actually did the 1st two gigs at the venue and essentially secured the work anyway so I doubt Pete the Landlord will have issues over him covering for me.

Shaun, you are correct, the landlord is a veteran D.J of 32 years experience as I've mentioned before, he actually plays up there on the opposite weeks that I am there - so he does one week I do the next etc - that gives me the oppotunity to also run the mobile and not become reliant on the residency in case it goes pear shaped. The Landlord has just covered for me in a month long "holiday" as I mentioned last month, so I didn't want to push my luck, by asking him to cover for another two gigs in a row, since I've only just returned! hence why I need to provide cover for myself and take my "turn" as usual smile.gif .

Music shouldn't be a problem - Richard already has a standard D.J collection that he uses on the mobile and the extra club stuff that he'll need, I can take out of my own collection, since there will be little need for "Clubland Extreme" material at a Wedding Reception!!!.

I will just need to brief him on format and running order, since tastes up there have changed drastically in the 12 months since he has been there, and he's likely to cause a riot if he plays Sclub7 or 5ive when 95% of the Audience are into Club, Trance, R&B and white label material excl.gif

Thanks for your advice....100% agreement from everybody on doing the Wedding is the option i'll go for smile.gif

CP, this is a little late in reply - but I agree with some of the comments.

I understand the dilemma oh too well. It can be a pain but something to talk about in the future!!!

I'm sure Richard is capable - but we are talking a regular venue, with the possibility of losing the gig over ONE night - it's not a loyalty decision. Remember the fuss Spindoctor had when he arranged SET UP of equipment through someone else.

My solution 1:

Cancel the club night due to a matter of a personal nature. Apologise. Carry on as before after.

Solution 2:

Find out if there are any experienced djsunited members available for the night - to OVERSEER Richard, for moral support, peace of mind, etc.

Solution 3:

Pay a MINI-SKIRTED dolly bird to 'assist' Richard, and ensure she drops her handbag alot. The club venue manager will not complain. 221.gif

YOU HAVE TO DO THE WEDDING.
RE-ARRANGE YOUR SCHEDULE FOR THE CLUB
FORWARNED IS FOREARMED - IF THE VENUE MANAGER CANCELS FUTURE GIGS BECAUSE YOU WAS 'EMPLOYED', THEN IT IS A CONSEQUENCE!
(and if you lose the regular gig - you need a slap on the wrist for lack of foresight!!!)
