For some strange reason the music man and the hokey cokey have been my best received songs of the night for my last few gigs. There must be something in the drink round this way at the mo lol. Any similar experiences?

huh.gif WHAT??

I guess you should add the words "that I can find" to your sentence tongue.gif

There is tons of great new music around, search for it, seek it out, you'll be amazed. The problem IMO is the mainstream playlists which get pumped into our heads.
Chrispy
Other than Gnarled old Barkely, I must admit that there isn't much in the Charts needed for my forthcoming run of Weddings, at least not if the indicated playlists are anything to go by, certainly a 70's and 80's cheesefest seems the order of the day.

Still I suppose it saves money on buying any new stuff, I'm still getting over my spending spree at Xmas scared.gif

Just got back from tonights gig tunes that were best received were yep, you guessed it

The hokey Cokey, The Conga and the Y.M.C.A - now pass me the stilton toot.gif

I agree that theres not as much good new music around at the moment - When compared to the middle of the year - Its as though the music industry hibernate from November (except those with an eye on the Xmas No.1) and then sleepily rise from their long sleep, about May-ish... give or take a month.

As for the rise in "I am the Music Man" requests, I wonder if its anything to do with supermarket giants Waitrose, teaming up with "ocado" for their home delivery service, and using a cover version of "Music man" for their "Ocado man" jingle, which goes a little something like this: (all together now...)

From the weddings I've done so far this year I would say that cheese is out of favour - in fact over the last year I've only played the really cheesy stuff if specifically requested and, with just 2 exceptions, I've had an 'almost cheese-free' 2006 so far (there's always gonna be one or two songs).

At tonights gig I was sitting in the staff rest-room until I could set-up and one of the staff said 'I suppose you'll be playing the normal wedding stuff that we hear every week' I replied 'Don't know - let's wait and see'

At the end of the night I spoke to the same guy and asked him if it was the same stuff he hears every week and he said well there were half a dozen.

I think that the perception of wedding DJs is that we all play that same stuff week in, week out, regardless of our audience and I'm been trying to move away from that so that I stand out either as one to avoid or one to book. smile.gif

Having said that if they want cheese all night I'll give them cheese all night (pass me the pills) but from my recent experiences more & more audiences are looking for something different and I do find that when I avoid the predictable stuff and play other tunes instead I get a far better reaction biggrin.gif

Funny you should say that as I had just finished one of them at the time (Clue: it wasn't spam or cheese)

Hey, don't knock it.

Many moons ago I did a corporate do for the Guild of Hospitality and Catering Managers or whatever their professional body is called.

In the absence of their after dinner speaker, and to bring 'em into a jovial mood with their Port and Stilton, I played 'em the Monty Python Cheese Shop sketch.

How much CHEESE can I claim for that? wacko.gif

Out of interest Analyst, did they all keep quiet and listen? I mean, with no focal point it must have been awfully strange to be playing them a comedy sketch.

Strangely enough, they did sit pretty quiet for it. Raised a few laughs.

I wasn't sure what reaction to expect, but it was a semi-formal dinner, so they were all seated.

It wouldn't have worked for a sporadic chatty standing buffet.
