Just As I had decided on a Pioneer CDJ800 Mk2 as a back-up deck I came across the similarly specified Vestax CDX 05 at £160 less.
Nothing's for nothing so there has to be a reason for it being so much cheaper.
Has anyone had a demo of this model or is anyone aware of its pedigree?

The Vestax CDX 05 is £160 less

How much are you being charged for the CDJ-800?

CDJ800 MK2 £479.95 ( not CDJ800 - £439.95. )
Neither is a price I'm paying, they're the prices on the website where the Vestax is listed at £319.95

Regarding the Vestax vs Pioneer..
I can only offer advice as a service engineer, and I have to say that getting spares out of Vestax is like getting blood from a stone. Many independent dealers I've spoken to actively avoid stocking Vestax for this reason. Pioneer parts are not a problem.
Pioneer are a better-built CD player by far, as much as quality goes.
As a DJ I can't comment on their scratching ability as I dont use CD players for this purpose, if you want a cheaper machine than a PIO CDJ800 then why not consider the PIO CDJ200 or Denon DNS1000, I would trust either brand much more than all of the others.

We never sold Vestax products due to spares problems and their over use of micro surface mount components which were not really up to the job. Result: a rather disapointing product back up.

Thanks for the reminder. I'd forgotten about the Denon. Good spec and around the same price as the Vestax.

Yeah well if it's a toss-up between the Vestax and Denon, please go for the Denon! Vestax stuff looks good on paper and is nice to use but the Denon is better built for 'grown ups'.
