So got a chauvet dmx 50 controller and a behringer vmx 1000 mixer.
How do I connect from the mixer to chauvet? On the dmx 50 there is a midi input, is that to be used only if you have a midi something with output?
What I’m getting at is…will the dmx sync the lights to the beat other than using the lights inbuilt mic? And if so how do I connect them together properly. I’m using dual cd player and two decks.
One other thing. I’m using phono lead extensions for the deck to vmx 1000. Though I am lacking the earth connection with these to the mixer. Is there anything I can buy to earth so I can use the extensions?
Thanks in advance.

Regarding the deck earths, just use a straight piece of plain wire. It's nothing special and not a safety earth, just a signal earth, they are kept seperate from the phono earths to avoid inducing hum into your coax leads.
I believe the DMX50 already has a built in mic? Just select 'music' on the trig button. Or if you want to connect direct with your mixer out, you can use a piggy-back phono connector off either left or right main outputs.
The midi socket has nothing to do with sound-to-light, it's provided for cloning the DMX programs from one controller to another amongst other things.

I saw that one after I bought mine. Would have gone for that one as it is cheaper.

why and what do you want the midi control to come from............ do you have anything with your disco that is midi compatible ???.
I have the Thomann and it is the same as the chauvet. great piece of kit. I suspect you will never use the midi and the built in mic is fine unless you are playing very quiet music.
I mainly use the joystick to control moving heads.

The main reason that lighting desks have midi ports on them is so they can be synchronised to midi files, used to supply the backing tracks for a band or singer. The lights can be programmed to adjust automatically to the song in question, and are usually added on top of a music track to give the desired effects at the appropriate time. If you do not have a midi-equipped laptop, sequencer, synthesizer or replayer, dont worry about it. Its unlikely to be of use to a DJ.
I seem to recall that NJD used to use an old keyboard hooked up to a Merlin with individual lighting sequences written in felt-tip on each key, presumably to allow less skilled people to demonstrate their light effects.
