How do you guy's introduce your show?

eg,

"Hello and welcome, it's so nice to see so many lovley people this evening, I'm _____ and i'm your dj this evening etc..."

and when do you announce this at wedding's??

Do any of you use jingle's etc...??
Chrispy
I used to have some really cheesy Jingles - I think they were produced by an American Company called "PAMS" and voiced by a (then) famous Deep Voiced presenter called Bill Mitchell. They were really corny but they worked and got peoples attention. The problem in those days was that they were recorded an a standard cassette tape - so a right censored.gif to cue up, especially in a rush.

During the early 90's these were replaced with some custom jingles when the now famous "Ultimate" company started in business, they were really good quality but expensive - of course the advantage over the earlier ones was that you had your name on the Jingles - instant promotion.

I don't use any jingles anymore, no real reason, I just stopped using them. I'm sure that Dan would work out a good price if you wanted any production work or Jingles doing for your show - i've heard a sample of his work and its good! - just like his map (Another Pint you owe me Dan!) smile.gif

Nowadays I just start up by welcoming everybody to the venue, announcing the Birthday Girl / Boy and getting a round of applause for them (Or call the B & G up for the first dance if its a Wedding / Anniversary), Introduce myself and play the first track. Then between the first and second track I start inviting requests. Then the difficult part of the evening begins - filling (or trying to fill) the dancefloor 533.gif

At weddings as soon as the B&G indicate that they're ready for the first dance I grab the radio mic, go out onto the dance floor, welcome everyone to their evenings entertainment, tell them what's gonna happen over the next three songs, to get cameras ready, ask them if they've had a good day (I'll soon put an end to that) and then get them to give the B&G a big '5 Star' cheer as they come onto the floor.
After 1st dance prompt rest of bridal party and later persuade everyone else to get up for the 3rd (sometimes works, sometimes not).

I do have quite a large selection of jingles on minidisc and occasionally use them. I've also made up a few of my own using snippets from records. To give you an example. Last xmas to start the shows after the meal I made a jingle which started with 'Ladies & Gentlemen, boys & girls , it is my pleasure to introduce to you' (from Big Brovaz) then into some personal jingles. The whole thing lasted about 30 secs and gave me the chance to get from behind the decks out onto the dancefloor for some chat to wind the audience up ready for some serious partying.

Using minidisc for jingles is an easy and cheap way. I limit the number on each disc to about 100, only about 5% of the disc but it makes them easier to find. If you have nothing interesting to say between 2 records and they don't mix easily stick in a short jingle.

For birthday parties, if it's a surprise one I prime the audience that as soon as the individual arrives I will play 'Happy Bithday'. I've found if you don't organise this bit they'll all start at different times & it sounds awful. Then three cheers followed by the No1 record on the day that they were born (it brings a tear to the eye - especially if it's something like Clive Dunn, Grandad) laugh.gif

I think the important thing at any gathering like the ones we do is to try and break the ice (some weddings can be more like wakes). I don't tell jokes but might make a jovial/ light hearted comment related to the event or the venue - if you can get them laughing or cheering you've usually got them on side - how long that lasts is another matter wacko.gif .

custom jingles are not that expensive. as Chris said have a word with Dan ( the map man), catchy name lol tongue.gif

my voice over was provided by Dan Harper hes the station voice for the likes of Heart and Talk Radio. It was around £20 for 4 lines. There are also some good value production companies out there aswell. Email me for details. Examples of my dry lines are on myweb site, just run your cursor over the speakers.

Anymore for anymore?

Excuse me..... arent we DJs? I HATE jingles with a vengeance..... what are they for? Isnt it our job to announce the buffet... welcome the guests... tell them that the bar is closing/last orders? What ever next! Perhaps we could replace ourselves with a blow up model instead of standing behind our decks!! Come on guys! Unless you have a serious aversion to the mic then WHY use jingles! Persuade me that we need them!

What is a Jingle in the 21st century?

I get a lot of work from 'mixed music beds - 2-8+ songs mixed and voiced over for 20, 30,40,50,60 seconds.

Yes, like an Independant radio link but the voice over can be anything as required, be it to advertise your Telephone Number, Disco name, DJ name, Bingo Call, brand of toilet roll or sexual aid - whatever!"
(And of course - my commissioned work is confidential!!!!)

But the jolly old Jingle classics - corny or sad, are forefathers of the modern jingle.

Not all Jingles have voiceovers - some DJ's when beatmixing use a link track to bridge the next music selection - a type of modern 'mix-jingle', but a jingle of sorts!!!!!!

Even Karaoke has censored.gif annoying jingles!

Yes, DJ's can overuse jingles - but think of the softly spoken DJ who is mic shy.......ahhhhhh!

I will produce some jingles for everone to use or try as a freebie when I get some spare time.....but will need to discuss the distribution.....I have not put figures together yet....will seek advice from CSL on best ways to make available!!!
TOTAL PINT LIST TO CP OWED NOW IN DOUBLE FIGURES pepsi.gif

if you are softly spoken and mic shy....... are you in the right job! No jingles for me thanks! I will carry on using my own voice and wit!

I've not got any problem with you doing this Dan, if you were to make them in MP3 or .zip format I can put them for download on the forum thumbup.gif

For those of you who are mic shy and need to use a jingle..... I have just gone into production of providing life size cardboard cuts outs of which can lip synch to those jingles!! 071.gif

The following is a quote from my father, Dave to you lot! who is here tutting! biggrin.gif

QUOTE
the only voice overs/jingles that he has heard are to corny, if he was shy on the mic there is no way on this earth for instant that he would announce the buffet using the voice over, "rub a dub dub, it's time for the grub, yummy some grub 4 my tummy,! you just cant do it, if its the case of being that shy that you cant force youself to talk over the mic, then this aint the job for you!

How or why you need to use such jingles is intirely your preferance but as a mobile he can see no reason why you need them at all!
Next you'll be telling us you still all use the sound effects! do you? would be intrested to know where you fit the howling wolf or footsteps into you preformance!
I've got to agree with all this as if it wernt for him I would never have leant a thing!

i dont use jingles - and im not all that cheesy really. usually its just:

"good evening ladies and gentlemen, i think the time has come for me to introduce myself - im your dj for the evening, come and see me for any requests blah blah blah.......no id like to invite the bride and groom to take to the floor for their first dance as mr + mrs ......."

Most of the gigs i do people just dont like cheesyness! im not shy on the mic at all tho - happy to use it when necessary. but hey - different styles work for different peeps!
DJ Spinko
Agree with Kaz in that we are the DJ, however, I do use the odd jingle, especially during presentation evenings, and Christmas.
They are also a great way to promote the show, I remember being very impressed as a young tenneager with DJ's that had their own jingles promoting the show.
I'm in limited favour of them but not 'overuse'.
