Here ya go Crooksey:-

Free webs

Since some free host's are here today gone tomorrow!, it's always important to keep an updated back up of your site on your PC, just in case your host disappears!. This is should be done with any host, although for obvious reasons the free hosts tend to vanish more frequently!.

how do i do backup?

and thanks chris! biggrin.gif

If your building your site from front page or any other pc based software then the chances are that you'll have snapshot of your site anyway on the pc. The problems start if you build it using the online web based site builders which often come free with your webspace!.

The best way of backing up is just to download a direct copy of the contents of your "public_html" or "WWW" folder from within your webspace via your ftp software.

Hi folks

Ok, I'm sorry but I'll have to say it again *smile*

If you want to get visitors to see your site from search engines, please please please invest in paid hosting. Search Engines do not give priority to freespace websites. Don't press me for a reason, that's just the way it is.

I started off with freespace for a couple of websites I managed and found loading times were slow, reliablility was poor and the company went pop within six months. Quality costs and you generally get what you pay for, so if you're paying nothing, guess what you get?

What about ISP related webspace Darren - i.e BTO, Freeserve, Tiscali etc, do they come under the freebie label?

Got Bill Gates' mobile number somewhere, I think he does something to do with computers

Hi Chris

I'm afriad the freespace you get with ISP's also counts. They're not quite as bad as the main contenders, eg, tripod etc. but they're still further down the food chain.

The bigest problem with the like's of BT, tiscali and other ISP's, is the fact that they managed so many thousands of other pages b other users on their servers, mostly full of personal, look at my holiday snaps websites, hense slow loading time.

I use a company call me2uweb, they are very reliable, god email support, fast loading and pretty sinch to get ytour head around.

i've used them for nearly two years now and my sight has never been down due to technical failure.

I get 50mb of webspace for 12 month for £20.00 plus vat.

Also the problem with freespace, any freespace, is you are unlikely to get support for CGI, pearl, ASP, databases etc, and they certainly wouldn't be able to provide secure servers if you wish to go down the line of credit card bookings.

Hope that helps a little.

Darren

Ps The address for me2uweb is www.me2uweb.com

And apologies for the bloody awful typing. I should write posts in Word first and spell check.

what about ftp software? someone wanna explain that to me too? i get html and all, but not that.... wacko.gif

ftp is the protacol for the movement of files. If you are uploading files to a ftp account then you will need a program like cuteftp, you can use your explorer window but becomes 'silly' after a bit.

Right so you have some webspace and you have your web site sitting on your computer, an index.html and a folder called images. If you want to upload those files how do you do it?
If your host allows you to upload via ftp, this will make your life easy as all you do is drag and drop the files into your ftp program where you want them. Just like you do when you move files on your computer.
If your host only has a browser uploading setup you will have to manually upload each file, which takes time, you will also have to make a new folder called images.
Ftp good and fast
brower upload bad and slow

hope this helps biggrin.gif

Hi again

Cute FTP is a good program for uploading your web pages, however, it's only available as a trial, then you have to pay to get a registration key. Well worth the cost but thought you ought to know.

FTP Explorer is another stirdy file transfer program, it's free too which is even better. However it is very basic and will only allow you to upload and download your files. I won't go into file permission and the like as it'll only confuse the crap out of newbies.

For anyone using Frontpage2000 and later, it has it's own uploader, whether using FTP, or to sites where the frontpage extentions have been enabled, oh god here we go into techie talk again.

I'll leave it there.

smart ftp is free and it works. I use the ftp built in MX.

Hi

I've used MX and was very impressed. I've always wanted to use Dreamweaver past versions, however I'm totally blind and prior versions were not compatible with my adaptive software so I couldn't access the functions. MX is much better and a good deal of thought has gone into making it as accessible as possible. Is still not perfect, but adaquate for now.

however I find dreamweaver vastly over priced, fine if you intend using every little function on it, but for anyone who isn't a professional webmaster, toooo much money!

My 30 day trial's run out now so I won't be using it any more *sulk*
