I occasionally like to play a couple of classic 'jive' tunes, the rock n' roll from the late 50s/early 60s. I already have enough to do the job but am wondering if any of you have suggestions for some must-have tracks from this era, as I'd like to increase the tracks available and provide a bit of variety, rather than play the same 3 or 4 every time.

The more up-tempo tuff like these:
Rock Around The Clock
At The Hop
C'Mon Everybody
Tutti Frutti
etc etc

Ideas, anyone? smile.gif

Good Golly Miss Molly
See You Later Alligator
Wake Up Little Susie
Hound Dog
Jailhouse Rock
Johnny B Goode
Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On

What year does Labamba belong too??????

Ritchie Valens died in 1959 on the same plane as Buddy Holly.

Classics are any Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Carl Perkins and the early Elvis tracks as well as Bill Haley.

Also Eddie Cochran, Danny & The juniors and Frankie Lymon.

You can also use early Cliff, Marty Wilde, Joe Brown, all the originals from The 6-5 Special era.

Must have tracks:-

The Girl Can't Help It
Roll Over Beethoven (original Chuck Berry)
Weekend
Shake, rattle & roll
High School Confidential
Move It
Ready Teddy

Many artists have covered La Bamba, the Los Lobos re-release was in 1987, it was on a film soundtrack, forget which film though.
Other good jiving tracks are:
Gene Vincent-Be Bop A Lula
Little Richard-Tutti Frutti
Everly Bros-Wake Up little Suzie
Beatles-I Saw Her Standing There
Jackie Wilson-Reet Petite

Nobody has mentioned the one RnR track that gets both young 'uns and old 'uns alike up - Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell", from Pulp Fiction.

Never, ever fails. Play it with See You Later Alligator (Bill Haley) and Move It (Cliff) as a slower set to start them off. Later on I Play Twist and Shout (Beatles), Houng Dog (Elvis) and Great Balls of Fire (Jerry Lee Lewis).

If you want a more modern RnR set then Twistin' by the Pool (Dire Straits), with Showaddywaddy, Shakin' Stevens and, my consumate favourite, Brian Setzer Orchestra is good.

C'Mon everybody (Eddie Cochrane)
Tiger feet (Mud, 70's)
Walk of life (Dire Straits, 80's) - Use this as an "opener" to a Jive set as it has a slowish intro.
for a "slower" jive, what about "Teenager in Love" by Dion - as a bonus, fade the track down when the chorus comes in for a bit of audience participation!

Clive.
