It was that loud, my ears are still ringing this morning! Had to lip read CP whilst ADS had his wicked way with the speakers!!!

Had to force my way across the crowded dance floor whilst refusing all those drinks from the over friendly clientel!

Andy, hope you got home alright. Was a nice chat with you both!

OK, so it wasn't excately as I told it........

It started off official at 7pm, the brides father came over and said hello, then by about 7.30pm a few guests had arrived, we were expecting 60 people, by 8pm we had 8 people in the room, and 4 people sitting outside on the picnic tables, still no bride or groom, which isn't unusal, at 8pm the wedding cake was assembled in the middle of the dancefloor, ready for cutting, by 9pm, the groom had turned up but had some 'business' to attend to, at 9.15pm the bride arrived, but which time we were 15 minutes late for the hot buffet, so it was decided to have the buffet first, then the cake cutting, straight into the first dance, unfortunatly the 'business' took a little longer than expected (the other guy must have put up a stronger fight than expected),

Anyway ay around 10pm we had the first dance, then the bride and groom disappeared again, only to arrive back whilst another guest wsa dragging a young lad out the door, after a little 'discussion' the groom, and best man, and a few others had 'agrred' the the other lad should go to bed, I don't think the lad too much about it, unfortunately in the process of the latter 'discussions', the groom had accidently hit his own sister, breaking her nose as well (notice the 'as well' bit, know what I mean ?)

The cake was eventually cut at 11.15pm, after last orders, and after the atmosphere had calmed down a little I did have a full dancefloor, requests included Wham, and Tiffany.

I used my new rack systems, I think Chris has some photos, and six speakers, both active and passive, totalling about 2kw, although I only used about 350 watts of this, I had 4 Chameleon lighting effects up on my rig about 6' away from the racks, but as the whole area I was meant to set up in by about 6' square, I used the 6' dancefloor too.

The gig finished at 12, and I left the hotel at 1am, to drive the 250ish miles home, arriving at 4.30am this morning.

It was nice meeting Chris and Andy, as without them no-one would have believed me, I hope you enjoyed it, and look forward to your comments about the night and equipment

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif Blimey! Reminds me of a wedding I did about 20 years ago. The grooms mum and the brides mum has a minor disagreement and flung handbags at each other just after the 1st dance. There followed what I can only describe as a brawl between both families. I got home at 10pm. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/hiding.gif

I never thought to take pictures!

Liked the consoles/racks, very very neat and pro looking.

You never mentioned the table decoration which spontaneously (Sp?)caught fire!!!

A woman shouted "its on fire!" whilst looking at the lights, so my first reaction was to look at Andy's lighting, however, it was a table decoration on an un-occupied table that had some how caught fire.

Oh yeah, I missed that I was trying to organise at least 4 people in to watch the first dance I seem to remember.

I really must go to more of Andy's Gigs http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/221.gif

After all, when all 21 guests had turned up, with 3 DJ's in attendance that makes a ratio of 7 Guests to Each DJ http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif . Certainly Andy offers value for money since when did any other roadshow offer such 1:1 Dj - Guest attention http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif .

So after the initial excitement of wondering whether we were going to eventually get more Guests than Hotel Staff, and the heart stopping moment when a candle set the table decoration on fire the actual gig finally got underway, closely followed by the fighting.

In the meantime I managed to fight my way through Andy's massive adoring crowd and snap a few pictures.

http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/andy1.jpg

Here is Andy's main rig, made up of two rack mount flightcases which house (from memory) DAP Palladium Amplifier, C-mark Amplifier, Behringer X-Over, Behringer Mixer, Sony Minidisc Player, Twin CD Player, Radio Mic Receiver, Constella DMX Controller, 2x 8 Way Power Switchpacks, Ryger DX403 Lighting Controller and a few other bits and bobs. These Racks also double as handy Xmas Lighting decorations.

http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/andylight.jpg

Andy's lighting rig. Consisting of 4x Constella DMX Chameleons linked together. The famous stand whose tripods alone weigh 31lb each and give many a roadie backache, complete with an overhead lighting bar which (as Andy Demonstrated personally) can safetly hold the weight of an average Torquay Dj suffering from mild Beer Gut and middleaged spread!

http://www.chrispointon.f2s.com/andy2.jpg

The Front Rig shot

Andy likes a lot of room (Probably down to the aforementioned beer gut) to wonder up and down whilst DJ'ing, and so unlike some other DJ's doesn't fence himself from the audience by having his Mixer and racks in front and around him. In fact Andy's rig is not that much different from a stand at the Plasa in the manner in which it is laid out. In other words, all of the gear at the back but still nicely on display and the DJ (Salesman) making himself visible, available and approachable to the audience. I can see the advantages of doing this!.

The photo shows Andy's Powered Speakers (HZ) and also the Skytronic Bass Bins and Warrior Cabs. In total Andy had around 2kw of Audio which would have been enough for around 3 times the size of room. However given that both the Amps driving the speakers were running at around -10db and barely even ticking over, then it was obvious that the distortion would be low, zero chance of clipping or overdriving and although I would say that 6 speakers and 2KW would be OTT for most venues of this size again the Sound was remarkably clear and impressive considering that both the Warrior Cabs and Skytronic Bass Bins would be frowned upon by some. Proof enough that you don't have to spend £1000's or buy top end equipment to create a decent sound system http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif .

(Yes the silver object in the far right of the picture is indeed Andy's Power Rangers flask http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif )

One of the Guests

Unfortunately, it was one of those nights that we all dread, but get from time to time. A handful of Guests - most of them bits of kids who can't handle their drink causing trouble and it turns into a long night. But credit to Andy, he didn't just give up and play non stop music, he was still there encouraging them onto the dancefloor with the mic and trying to diffuse the trouble which was happening and the resulting negative atmosphere.

Fortunately, I think it's put him off gigs in the Northwest, so that leaves more for the rest of us. Sod off back to Torquay http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/bigstar.gif

Seriously, thanks to Andy for the invite (and splashing out on the Canada Dry!), it was also great to meet Kingy, who brought along some photos of his DJ'ing exploits from the 70's and 80's. Yes, I can confirm that he really did once have a full head of Hair and DLT style sideburns!. I wonder why these pictures have never been scanned and put on the forum http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/scared.gif .

Not a bad memory Chris, the amps were C Mark nad a HZ DPX1500, both 1500w (750w per side each, so a total of 3kw), think the Ryger is a MX404.

in the picture the left hand rack, which is 16U has the amps, a fan in between them, a Behringer Crossover, a 8 way switch pack, the Ryger, a blanking panel with one IEC out, another 8 way, and a blnking panel that stops the laptop slipping off, behind the laptop I also have a 2 double sockets, to plug my laptops into, covered by some ADS childproof covers !

The last piece of kit, at the bottom of the rack is a 12 way IEC pack, which I plug my speakers and lighting into.

The right hand rack is the sound, mixer etc.

As for the sound I had the HZ activees for about 5 years, and one started to play up, so I needed some sort of backup, with other projects in mind I decided to buy passive, so got the Warrior's, rated at 300w each, I didn't want to do Knebworth, so 300w is more than enough, I was going to just get the Warriors, but needed a back up amp, so decided that rather than spend £40 upwards on a decent set of speaker stands I would spend the same amount of money on some cheap bass bins, making the show safer in the process, no legs to fall over, I think I paid about £35 each for the bins, I thought I wouyld rather have 600w of bass, then 0 watts of stands, it was a wise choice !

As Chris stated I had 2kw for a room that measured 20' x 30', but I like to keep my amps low, and the sound clear, so each 750w channel is powering a 300w speaker, plus the powered HZ at 300 watts each.

As for the lighting all 4 lights were not DMX throught the controller, I put them in Master/Slave mode, and didn't bother with the two floor standing one I had last time Chris met me, and yes I did do some chin ups in the middle of the trussing and no it didn't bend, and I am at least 9 stone http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/whistling.gif

The whole thing, including emptying my van of back up gear, three flightcases and a flight trunk, took one hour to breakdown, so I left listening to the news at 1am, arriving home at 4.30am, which I was happy with, thanks mainly to my Power Rangers drinks !!

The way I set up was something I thought of a few years ago, as I was listening to a show on Radio 4, all about acting, and how an actor has to break down the barrier between himself and the audience, I took this on board, and got rid of my lightboxes and made a decision to have to frontage, so people can walk up to me to chat, request a song, or business card, it also makes it easier for disabled people to talk to me.

As you can see I gaffa tape everything down, and use insulation tape to hide all cables and wires.

It was one of those evening where Jive Bunny Master Mix CD 76 (the one that goes on for 764 minutes) would have come in handy, but I don't play mixes, I am a DJ that reads the crowd (all 21 of them !), not a jukebox, so I 'talk' most of the night, encouraging people to get up and join in.

I think if I put some effort in, it might not happen on the night, but all 21 of those people are potential customers, if each one booked me at £250, I make £5k, if I put on a CD I don't get thier bookings, which is why I had a three peice suit on, well I did until it looked like it might 'kick off' near my kit, so the jacket and waistcoat came off, cufflinks went into my pocket, and the tie got loosened.

The best bit was the round of drinks, well a Lager Shandy, a Coke, and a Canadian Dry only came to £6, meaning when it is Chris and Andy's turn to buy me a drink (at Plasa) it will be £6 EACH http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

As you can see from the pictures we were allow back near the building once the Fire Brigade had the fire under control, it was luckily still light, as it was only about 8pm, unfortunately what you cannot see was the rear of the building, which caught the worse of the flames.

The girl below was one of the better looking three there, although I bet Chris saw the one with bright pink high heeled shoes on http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/laugh.gif, unfortunately the grooms ssiter (the one that had her nose broken) was going to be the best at the party, up for a laugh, so as soon as she 'left' I knew it was going to be a long night (OK as soon as the 21 people turned up I knew it was going to be a long night)

Like Chris says it was nice meeting Andy (Kingy), and talking to someone who know a little bit about the industry, we talked about Peavey, JBL, and Mastermix, he gave me a book to read about DJ'ing, from 1980, it looked good, I will get it out from the van and read it soon, then pass it onto Chris.

One thought I have just remembered though, Richard (Big Ben) gave me the lead on this one, he did the brides sisters party a few months ago, I can't wait to hear how that went, I bet I had a more eventful evening !

Well what can I say? Sounds like a great night and one which you or the party-goers will never forget!

Seriously, what an amazing night. I'm sorry it was me that referred you to them but nobody could have even guessed it would turn out like this. I don't remember which gig I did for her sister but I have never had anything like this happen before - I certainly wouldn't pass on work knowing there was a hint of trouble, especially to someone as old as ADS. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif

I thought this would be a pearl of a gig, with the location and presumed cost of it all. I was really miffed I was on holiday when they called me. Just goes to show.

Welcome to Nantwich, the home of weddings from hell!
