have you never seen one of these before? They are basically the industry standard in this field, very primitive. I would rather see a comp/limiter than just shutting down the mains, but these are or were all over the place!

I hate these things.

You can buy a brick wall limiter for less than £100 which will just hold the audio at a constant level and not cut it out.

Some engineers don't know what they're doing when they install these into sound systems to stop DJs going over the "legal" volume.

Sound limiters often turn up in council run/council funded venues.

They've been mentioned a few times previously on the forum.

My own way working "with" a sound limiter, (rather than working "against" one) is to publically announce the existance of the sound limiter, to the public BEFORE it gets triggered. Tell them that it not only picks up music volumes, but that it also includes allows sound levels from voices, banging doors, singing etc - and tell them that everytime it decides that its been "in the red" for more than a few seconds, it cuts all your equipment power off for X seconds. This way, the audience knows that when all goes dark and quiet during their strangled cries of http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif "Hiiiii hoooooo silver lining" http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif its not because of a lack of servicing, or dodgy gear on your part...

I will not work with these types of unit due to the fact they can cause damage to your gear, particularily amplifiers. Remember that they reconnect themselves after a period and can power up without notice! Bye Bye output stages...

I point out the reason why and if the venue management are obliging, I plug in else where but still monitor the level displayed.

Interestingly, if you have a problem, point out that you dont play at silly levels and that you know these units can be tempremental, then ask the manager to sign a Disclaimer stating they are responsibly should this unit damage your equipment through cutting off the juice! If they refuse.... dont plug in or start to pack away. Watch them cover their eyes whilst you plug in elsewhere! It has happened to me.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/whistling.gif

Good one Ads! I hate them! When I had my PC hooked up at a gig one night it cut power straight off and nearly ruined my computer. It also looks very embarassing. The last venue I went to that had same limiter as above. makes the power stay off for a whole minute and god does it drag that minute! I know have run a cable through the ceiling and unplug the cooker in their kitchen and plug sound system in their. and the lights on sound limiter sockets.

The limiter in Wallasey Cons Club shuts off and doesn`t come back until a member of staff turns up with a key. Never happened to me yet, but another DJ tripped the unit and the key was in the pocket of an employee who was away on holiday. End of night.

He was offered the opportunity to plug in behind the bar on an extension lead but he decided to have an early night on full pay instead. He successfully argued the legality of over-riding the H&S enforcement which had been placed on the venue.

Am not sure what I would have done - probably plugged in behind the bar for the sake of the punter, but I still chuckle when I think of the red faces of the Comittee http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif
