Buying Music - Recomendations?

Recommended Posts

Hey

As many of you know Iam fairly new, not experience but as my own roadshow. Does anyone here recommend any online/mailorder/shop retailers that sell albums for use on a mobile disco for a cheapish price?

Also any recomendations on must own albums, singles etc? My current collection is mainly modern hits such as Dance (DJ Sammy, DJ Quicksilver, Tomcraft etc) and pop but this has catered the kids parties so far but Ive got around £500 to spend on music (lucky me).

Any help is welcomed!

Thnx

Mike

Try www.cdnow.com who sell both new and used cds... plus you can get some really hard to find stuff from them... they are based in the u.s but I order from them all the time - you will have to pay shipping - but it isnt much - and considering the £ vs $ is extremely good at the moment, you could do very well!

The other thing is to have a look at classic cuts..... £15 per disc but every track playable and they cover loads!

Otherwise, spend a few hours in asda/woolworths - they have some great deals at the moment and you will pick up albums for as little as £2.97 - you will get tons of music must haves!

Also, Matermix are quite good. They do the pro disc which covers all the new releases and also sell 50s, 60s, 70s,80s and 90s box sets and compilations.

They have quite a wide range of stuff. Worth a look.

Mikeh.......You have the perfect place right on your doorstep to go shopping for all the back dated stuff and many compilations too, I suggest you get yourself of to OLD TOWN MUSIC, I'm sure you know where it is as well as there bigger store in Eastbournes Arndale centre http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif very cheap and there larger store sells loads of box sets!

Be prepared to spend a whole day in the larger one, you cant go wrong in a place like that especially with there old stuff starting at £2!

I have evrything that music factory have ever done (not all the mixes but all the comp albums) and find them superb. I also have all the non mixed DMC stuff, which are also great. All originals, no copies!! Best tools for DJs, me thinks.

Must admit, I find "chart" music a bit of a bore at the mo... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/whistling.gif

BE CAREFUL of those "One member of the original line up" type albums.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/oops.gif

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/stupid.gif You can start by going into there Hastings Branch!, (the smaller one)

I thought that seen as you are a local you would know what I was talking about http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif

I must admit that the Mastermix type compilations are very expensive for single CD's, I suppose its down to who they are aiming the products at - i.e specialist market demands specialist prices http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif . Until they get some serious competition it will always be the same.

£25 per CD is a lot to pay, especially when you are just starting out. It's worthwhile remembering that if its just the non mixed bog standard music tracks that you are after, then Mastermix is not unique in its product.

For instance, compilation CD's containing music are always available in many variations and from all era's. I've found double CD's costing £14.99 or £19.99 from HMV which have more than covered 80% of the tracks contained on 2x Mastermix compilations!. Do the maths - 2x £25 Singles or 1x 19.99?? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif .

Talk to your local independant music shop. If its a sole trader they are far more open to negotiating mutliple compilation purchases (especially £500 worth!) than high street franchises. If you buy on a regular basis then don't be scared to ask for a discount. Retailers margins on Cd's are low, but you may be able to get a small discount if you go in there every week, or even the odd £2.99 freebie from their bargain bin http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif .

You don't have to pay for DJ Only cd's to get the majority of party classics either. Black Lace "Party" Cd's go for around £1.99 nowadays, other CD Compilations containing party tracks are available for between £5.99 and £9.99 with compilations offering double and treble CD Box sets for as little as £20. Also check out the box sets from Time Life and similar. Their "Rock", "80's", "70's" "60's" box sets offering excellent value for money for a fraction of their Mastermix Counterparts.

Agree with Crispy... Mastermix are ideal if you have lots of money and no time to get a collection together.... but if you are prudent and have a bit of time, I think you could get a really good collection together just by taking the time and doing some serious shopping around!

Hey

Well after looking around we have decided to take the steps of buying albums from all the local shops but still getting a few from mastermix, namely the two RnB ones and the Wedding/Party combo 7 disk one as these contain important songs all in one place.

Ive found that the NOW albums seem a pretty good source for all the common songs, Ive picked up copies of NOW40 to NOW47 for £2 an album, all in mint condition! boy I love the charity shop http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/smile.gif

Anymore suggestions, all welcome!

Anyway, Thanx for your time

Mike

http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wallbash.gif I give up! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/wacko.gif

Do you go into work with your eyes shut????

Sainsburys have got displays all over the place with cheap cd's on, hits of the 60's.70's/80's at £2.99 and then some of the NO 1's from these eras.

10 disc box sets of Soul, Reggae, Crooners, Party, Jazz, all at £20,

3 disc box sets of all the oldies at £5! and many many more.

By the way! I understand Hastings never had a Uni? where is the nearest uni?

Hey

Hastings has a university center in the town center, called UCH (University Center Hastings). It is basically a first for the UK, its basically a center with all required rooms al la it rooms, lecteur halls, media rooms etc which universities can run courses in. Currently all the running courses involved are run by Brighton uni, the ones in which Iam enrolled in.

Id also like to add the sainsburys I work in has very little selection in regards to music, only the basic latest albums and a few solo artist albums is all they have due to cut backs because of large amounts of theft!

Anyway

Hey

Paula, it still isnt completly opened yet but the first students (my course is one) started to use the building beginning of this educational year, so basically its been in 'working' use since September 2003. Great place but currently they are knocking the front off of it to make way for a glass front with glass lift and entrance which shall be nicer than Hastings College http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html/emoticons/tongue.gif

Anything to keep us entertained, whetherspoons pub seems to do a lot better now, with 15+ students in there every day from my course alone all wanting a drink after the programming assignments/tests.
