Lights for a starter

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am just getting back into Djay'ing and would like some advice on lights.

I have a budget and would like to try sticking to it - £400 for a lighting kit.

I have seen the following lights and would like your advice on which is best. I will be doing gigs at local bars that have a dance floor for 40 - 80 people. I would like to have a small controller so I can control the lights rather than have to reach up and fiddle with switches on the lights.

1. Acme Dynamo scan - 4 lights

2. Zoom scat scan - 4 lights

3. Acme tomahawk and patriot kit (looks a bit flimsy)

4. Prolight Concept dynamo scan pack

5. Or maybe a combination of these lights???

Off course I have to have the accessories into my budget too...

1. A goal post stand

2. A carry case for the lights

I'm sure it's all possible for circa £400.

Your help is much appreciated :)

the only ones i'm familiar with is the acme dynamos, they are an excellent light for the price a lot of people on here have them and agree, use the search engine and you will find loads of subjects with them in.they are only 100 watts but look far brighter and for the size of your dancefloor will be more than ample.

on your last post you mentioned you wouldnt buy off ebay because you wanted to buy local,i wouldnt push you to buy off ebay but would recomend having a good look at thomann

Hi,

I have a set of the ACME Dynamo scanners and whilst I really like them I would not have them as my only lights as you will be limited to four light patterns at any one time (one from each light). I also have some Chameleon 4s (good but discontinued) and some Stairville Earthquake Moonflowers (250watt, well built with nice effects and gobos).

My suggestion would be to get 2 or 3 Stairville Earthquake DMX at about £100 each (identical to ACME Falcon) and a Stairville DMX Master 1 at £75.

If you are in the Plymouth area and want to collect it, I will sell you a nearly new 3.0 mtr triangular truss lighting gantry with a couple of tripod stands for £45 (will carry upto 100kgs).

This would take you slightly over your budget but would get you into DMX, give you good coverage with some decent 250 watt effects, a decent lighting gantry with room for expansion and pave the way for some more DMX lighting in the future. Not much help with the cases though.

A pair of acme firebirds 250w (Non DMX) will fill an average venue for 200 people on their own, fan cooled and cheap bulbs £79 each.

I have a pair of Acme Falcons (dmx) 2yrs old hardly used maybe 20hrs total did have four but sold a pair last year. The pair for £100 collected with dmx conecting cable and instructions

That's a great deal Jimbo, if only you have said last month http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/014.gif

I do like the Stairville Earthquakes except the red heart gobo seems to be upside down, is this the same with the ACME Falcons or have they just changed the gobo around to satisfy copyright issues?

Eddie,

aprreciate the offer, but I'm in London (near Wembley!).

So you recon the Acme Dynamo will limit the lighting effect I present to the crowd? I was thinking that too. Obviously the thing that draws me to the kit is the price and the fact that they look good.

However as you say, you suggestion will take me over my budget http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif

not sure if i can mention a supplier, but you can get a kit of 4 dynamos with CA8 controller, DMX cables, lamps, 10ft goalpost truss and flight case for £499.99

try a web search for "dynamo kit 1"

i would go for some moonflower type lights as well though.

Ok if I was you and just starting out and had £400 this is what I might do:

It all comes from a company called thomann.

Lighting Stand Stand (x2 Stands and Truss) £53.13

http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_sls300.htm

x2 Starville Logo Flowers £102.12p Each

http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_logo_i...elli_flower.htm

x4 LED Par 56 Lights £45.54 Each

http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_led_pa...alu_schwarz.htm

This makes a total of £439.53p which I know is just over your budget but would give you a nice show to start with. I know this does not include the flightcases or a controller but if you keep your eye out you should beable to get a nice controller for less than £100. Plus the lights will run sound to light till you can dmx them.

If i were you, Id get 2 x datamoons £220 ish. Then I`d call Paul (Hi Fidelity) he has 2 colourscans with a controller in the cases for sale (if he still has them).

This way you have 4 decent lights which will consist of 2 flower effects and 2 scan effect lights.
