DJmoonie 0
Forgive me if this has been asked before, but as a relative forum virgin, I'm allowed the odd ragingly obvious post. As a mobile DJ, how many of you out there play off vinyl or cd's, and how many drive the evening straight from a PC ? And regardless of what you use, how many mobile dj's beatmatch and mix their tunes ? (full beatmatching live, as opposed to a simple fade crossover etc). Answers on a postcard please. Andy Westcott 0
Can't guess at the ratios, but CDs for everything released in the last 12 years or so, with about half of my oldies on 7" and 12" vinyl, the other half coming from compilations. No computer, with no plans at present to use one, although I can certainly see the benefits. It just doesn't 'sit well' with me yet - I'm an old die-hard I suppose.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif I have actually now finished recording the 800 or so vinyl singles I still carry about onto the computer, and am awaiting the introduction of a suitable license to allow me to legally use CD-R, when I'll burn them all onto disc. dj.silver 0
100% Traktor user, have been for 2 years, always have 9,000 tunes with me on an external hard drive the size of a small calculator, have 9,000 bpm's available that I can search at a press of a button to give me all tracks within 2.5% of a designated track. I have a tune search facility that can find a tune , then I can load it and it can be playing in less than 15 seconds of a request. I can programme a set, I can practise mixes at home on the dining room table without having to set up decks, amps etc.. I have all my tunes in genre folders so I can do, say, a 20 minute set on ska, punk, disco, house, cheese, 80's, 90's, rock etc... without having to look through loads of cd's. The benefits go on and on, don't get me wrong I started on vinyl in the late 70's on to cd's and now my trusty laptop. I would NEVER NEVER go back to cd's, far too much hassle. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif I once read about the evils of heavy drinking ................ so I've stopped reading COPYWIGHT: Elmer Fudd 1956, All wights wesewved. Jase Windu 0
As many around these parts, was 100% vinyl, gradually changed to 100%cd, but unlike most am now 100% computer. Saying that I miss the feel of vinyl and cd and I'm gonna get me one of those Denon's when they come out so I can ditch the laptop or use it as backup. Mind you me and Denon don't get on and if anyone can break one I'm the man. thinking about it I should get a job testing for them. Ooh and I beatmix more than I used to, mainly 80's to new dance stuff, just depends on thwe function
slug boy 0
i use mainly CD for every day stuff... but still take the laptop so i can A. easily search for what CD a track is on B. it's got all my more "unusual" requests it's the only way to carry 20,000 tracks in one hand!! Tonsk 0
100% CD - I too will go to the Denon 2500 once it's released, however wouldn't go laptop until the licences are sorted out 100%. Too risky - 15,500 tracks at £1000 fine per track? no thanks... The Right Music - based in Norwich and covering all Norfolk and Suffolk
PEDJ 0
hang on.....doesnt the new Denon player use a hard drive with the facility to add external drives? Whats the difference in music file formats used to that of a laptop?
BigBen 0
I tend to play CD only but I have the lappie permanently connected and ready as back-up or to find tracks quickly. The new year heralds a new start to my life - moving down south, etc. I plan to get the Denon HD2500 and 4500 and begin to learn to beat mix. That all depends on the job situation when I get there though! [insert quirky comment]

Too risky - 15,500 tracks at £1000 fine per track? no thanks... If you use the Denon unit with a Hard Drive you will still need the Digital DJ Licence as it currently stands (assuming I am reading the FAQ's correctly). QUOTE What can I copy the tracks onto? The licence allows you to copy or store sound recordings onto a computer or hard disk unit (but not other items such as CDs or mini-discs). ChrisPointon 0
QUOTE If you use the Denon unit with a Hard Drive you will still need the Digital DJ Licence Assuming of course you only intend to use a Laptop / Denon Unit for Public Functions ie pubs, clubs and Xmas Parties. Remember that there is no licence available to DJ's using digital formats for private functions - Weddings, 21st's etc. You can't have a licence for these because one doesn't yet exist as the PPL acts in the sole interests of issuing licences for Public Venues and Public Performances. A Private Function is not classed as a Public Performance, and never has been. Source:- Quote from PPL Digital DJ Licence FAQ Who can obtain a Digital DJ Licence? Any individual DJ who wants a licence to keep digital copies of sound recordings and use them for public performances can obtain a Digital DJ Licence from PPL Link to PPL PDF Document
FDDJ 0
Of course, which brings us back round to the fact that the whole licence is a waste of space and money in it's current form. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change." - Charles Darwin <a href="http://www.djassociates.org"><img src="http://www.djassociates.org/anims/compres_banner.gif" alt="Join the DJ Associates Disc Jockey Association" border="0" width="468" height="60"></a>
