Well I finally finished it.

It took me a lot longer than I expected, and ended up costing more than I planned, but I’m well chuffed with the final result.

My disco in a box.

30 seconds to put it on the stand and open it up.

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/8519/rigopen0uq.th.jpg

Drop the laptop on to the platform that has the power and usb sound card connecter ready.

Plug in a power lead and speakers and away we go.

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/6866/rigsetup7na.th.jpg

The object of the project was to give me a sound setup that was quick, with a minimum of messing about with leads, and that would be as versatile as possible.

On the left is a Behringer PMH3000 powered mixer, and just below that is a 1U panel that has from left to right. IEC socket, left & right speakon sockets, 2 video output sockets, and left and right line out from the CD/Karaoke player (for plugging into a backup amp if the Behringer fails).

On the right is the mic receiver at the bottom, then above that the CD/Karaoke player, with the platform for the laptop above that.

The flight case empty weighs in at 13Kg. Loaded (without the laptop), it weighs in at a fairly heavy 30Kg, (you certainly wouldn’t run for a bus carrying it, but nobody will run off with it either), but for me the weight is far outweighed by the convenience of setup and versatility.

With no speakers stands, I can have sound playing from a CD within 2 minutes of getting the gear into the venue. From the laptop, about as long as it takes the laptop to boot up.

One of the other main reasons for the project was also transportation. On a level access, or one with a disabled ramp, ie: no stairs. I’ve got it down to 2 trips.

In the road trunk are 2 Soundlab Vistas, 1 Chauvet salsa, 1 Wildtech Fascination, speaker stands and backup laptop.

So, what do you think?

Was it worth the effort? (I certainly think it was)

Does it look alright?

I really like the console case, although instead of paint I would have gone for a carpet like on my one which I built.

You have painted it well though! What paint did you use? and how many coats did you need for that finish?

Is that 12mm ply? Did you pleat the cloth round your console yourself?

Looks very nice, you certainly have got your setup down to a fine art. What's going on with that lighting stand btw? Is that because there isn't anything to balance the weight out? on the left hand side?

Anyhow top job! Sorry for all the quns, inquisitive minds

Paint, What Paint? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif The rigs covered in textured vinyl.

The sides, divider and ribs are 12mm ply, the top and bottom etc are 3mm ply to keep the weight down.

Yes & No http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/huh.gif It's acctually curtain ruffle tape on the back, and it was a joint effort between the wife, mother in law and me.

Sure is. Because of space limitations, I had to leave one light off the bar where the speaker is. Perfectly safe though as it's wound hard up against the ceiling.

Did you make the road trunk as well?

Yep! It's made out of 3mm ply believe it or not. But the way it's constructed with the welded steel frame makes it very strong & lightweight.

Is that an amp in there too below the DVD thing? What is it?

No, that's the mic receiver.

No, that's the mic receiver.

I'm confused..I see speakon sockets, but no amp.

It's a powered Mixer Bri. Amp built into the Mixer http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif . Paul has just put the sockets on the front panel and probably extended them from the back of the mixer.

I've just had another brainstorm. Think it may well be my next little project.

If I make some kind of coupling between the trolley and the road trunk, I can get it down to one trip. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif

Good work Paul. Now imagine if you had powered speakers and didn't need the weight of the powered mixer in the console.... nice.

I can't believe that the console idea I had about 6 or so years ago was innovative, because it just made so much sense to me. My latest console is hugely lighter and more compact than my first effort and I love that about it. I'm not getting any younger and I'm too mean to hire a Roadie... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Guys, I start to get backache just looking at my stuff. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif

I really must look at developing a smaller alternative setup, as up to now I just take smaller speakers along to the smaller gigs, keeping the amp rack, coffin case and so-on. Too much really for some gigs.

I reckon 100 watts per side fed into high efficiency speakers is enough for this kind of event, and I just happen to have 4 X 15 inch HH drive units kicking around - anyone remember them?? Lifetime guarantee!

Don't suppose anyone has got the T/S perameters for these HH 15B's available? http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/huh.gif
