It's quite easy to fill 5 hours with other popular/familiar music without the necessity to delve into the cheese counter. To prove it I reckon we could come up with 300 tracks that could be played in these circumstances (enough for 5 gigs). Here's the challenge: List as many (or as few) as you wish Tracks should be over 110 BPM Tracks can cover all genres/decades Start your list with the next consecutive number Tracks should be familiar to a typical family audience Please avoid, at this stage, commenting on previous submissions. The aim is to 1st of all reach the target. Here's my starters: 1. Bill Haley - Shake, Rattle & Roll 2. Ike & Tina Turner - Nutbush City Limits 3. Love Inc - (You're a) Superstar 4. Its just we have so much talk on here about not playing cheese... I already play many of the songs in that list and I do concider a fair few to be under the combined DJU idea of cheese... Dukesy 0 Posted April 28, 2007 Report Share Posted April 28, 2007 I guess tracks can cross many genres when you look at how one client considers music 'cheesy' and another 'pop' and another disco, etc. Even us DJs will differ in opinion on what is the ideal pigeon hole to class a piece of music but I guess from the clients point of view, we are expected to know because we are DJs!!! Not everyone does, do they? When Paul mentioned from experience "each year the number of Brides who want a 'Non Cheesy' wedding reception increases", I would say that year on year, I have found no definite pattern in B&G music tastes at weddings but in the same breath I probably don't do as many weddings as Paul so really difficult for me to put my finger on. However I have found that the requests at residency and third party private functions have turned more towards what I would class as 'Party music' which includes more of a variety of tunes from the easily identifiable sounds of recent years to years gone by....popular tunes played on radio stations such as Heart FM and the other ILRs which seem to emulate one another to target a particular age group, indeed, not all noise and very pleasant to an old git like me but repetitive somewhat too IMO! I'll go along with the view that one man's cheese is another's corn beef because that tends to be the analogy that can probably best define the majority of all client tastes at functions, or to put another way, you can never please everyone because everyone has a different taste, or in this case view of 'cheese'. Perhaps it might be a lot easier to maybe broaden the categories that a particular tune can be classed as by adding extra pigeon holes to tick against which include 'cheese' as a potential client term, liked by us or not???
